EVO 4-6 Aluminum 50mm thick Radiator fitted and working

    Following on from this thread:

    http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32652

The two radiator supports at the bottom were removed and moved, the one on the passengers side was moved 12mm towards the driver and the one on the drivers side was moved 30mm towards the drivers side. One this was done the radiator fit into the holes at bottom perfectly.

At the top the support on the passengers side lined up perfectly, but on the drivers side it is off by about 10mm. I re-drilled the holes in the support and it fits fine. You can see that in one of the pics.

Apart from that, the pipes are the same size and the bottom water hose from the engine fits straight on in the exact same place, no problems at all. The top hose location is about 10cm over to the passenger side. I simply rotated the hose at the thermostat end around about 180 degrees so the kink in it was facing around the other way, and it mated up perfectly once rotated.

The radiator cap is different. The EVO one has a big fat base on it, the VR-4 one doesn't. Luckily my friend Bill at Ralliart had a 1.3 Bar cap designed for an EVO4-9 and it went on fine.

The hose for the overflow fits on fine, but the cap is further over to the passenger side and this makes the hose too short to route nicely. I will get a longer hose and run it along the side of the radiator and under the air con pipes in a few days time.

Now as for the performance - I don't know for sure yet. I went from 50-109.4kmh about 15 times down the road next to mine tonight and all I managed to do was make the brakes smell funny. The temp gauge didn't move. Next time I take the car out on the track I hope it won't overheat. More importantly, the new radiator is sexy and all shiney. It matches in with the rest of the engine bay well and it won't crack like the stupid plastic ones.

nahh it's been very wet here for the last two weeks. I was going to drive down to Hamilton today in the VR-4 but decided to take the ST-R instead. Aquaplaned twice, even with GSD3's on!

Ant, there is a rubber mount and the peg thats part of the rad just fits in the hole in the middle of the mount. Undo the 2 bolts on each mount and they just pull off.
    No longer empty and frantic...

Back in the day I used to always put $20 (when petrol was <$1 per litre) worth of fuel in the tank at a fill. However, ever since they came out with supermarket discount vouchers which typically take 4c to 15c off per litre for up to 150 litres, I always fill it right up to get the maximum discount.

Does anyone here fill up with a fixed amount of money, $20, $60, £20 or whatever?

Nope, always filled right up. My first vehicle was a motorcycle and with no fuel gauge it is always a good idea to ensure you know how many km you have available.

I have never run out of fuel either. Fill up, reset the trip meter and away I go. I KNOW that I can get 450km out of a tank with heavy driving but I usually fill up every 350km.

Piece of mind is great and it means that if something comes up, you have plenty of reserve.

Nice work mate! Looks the business indeed.

Out of interest, I wonder if this ( sourcing a radiator to suit an evo 4-6 ) would actually be cheaper then trying to get a factory replacement VR-4 rad? Sorry if its been mentioned before.

Maybe for you in Australia, but I can't imagine it'd be cheaper in other more civilized areas of the world, like NZ for example, where Legnums / Galants are common.

Scocia, this one cost me $350. Stock radiators are usually available here for around $200-250 but in Aus it might be cheaper.

I'd just like to point out I'd done 120km on that tank before taking the pic
