    Rust removal - stupid question

In the process of removing some rust from my car. Stupid question maybe, but do I need to remove every last bit of rust, or can I possibly leave a bit, and paint over it or something? Just wondering if the stuff is something like a cancer and if one little bit survives, it will grow back, or if you deprive the oxide of water or oxygen, say by painting, shouldn't that put a stop to it coming back?

You can buy some stuff (dont know the name of it) that will stop the rust and stop it from spreading.
Its black and it reacts with the rust and goes green.

See if you can buy Jenolite Rust Treatment (or similiar) - I've used this in the UK years ago and is excellent stuff.

As others have said, get rid off all of the rust - if there are any pitted rust spots that won't go, sand away as much as you can. Preperation is key here.

Jenolite is a thick 'glue' type gel - you paint it on thin and evenly. On bare metal it turns a hazy clear 'clolour' while on any rust spots (if you've sanded them back as much as possible) it turns matt black.

Give it a a couple of thin coats on Jenolite, and then prime, top coat, and lacqure as normal.

Here's a link to the Jenolite product in the UK - but I'm sure you can get it where you are: http://www.wilcodirect.co.uk/index.p...oducts_id=1602

If you can get Bilt Hamber rust remover /converters I would try them. I've had very good results with there stuff but found the POR15 to be a pain to use

only way to truly remove rust is to cut it out and get new metal in there

I come across another product called Chassis Saver once, supposed to be similer to POR15, but cheaper. not sure if you can get it ouside the USA, or if they ship internationally though.

Isn't jenolite acid based? surely you need to remove it after its done it's job? otherwise surely it would react with any paint?

You'd think so but that's not the case. Last time I used it, about 15 years ago, you painted on the clear gel and it dried clear on 'clean' bare metal and turned a deep blue / black on rusted areas that had been sanded back and had any slight pitting remaining.
