Changing timing belt - what else should I change now?

After doing a search through loads of threads i compiled this list. i found that if i were to change the cambelt i would also be in my right mind to change:

    balancer belt,
    water pump
    pulley and pre-tensioners
    guide pulley.

Are some of those the same things? (newb)

    thanks,

there isn't a balancer belt but you could change the PAS and alternator belts. The tensioner and the 2 pulleys for the cambelt and the waterpump is a must i would say.

"what else should I should now? "

'What else should I _CHANGE_ now' is what I meant.

    One more question:

How overboard or smart is this?

change the camshaft seals, crankshaft seals, timing belt, tensioner, rollers, thermostat, all the thermostat gaskets, belts, coolant hoses, radiator cap, timing cover seal

    I'd suggest:

    change the camshaft seals, Nope
    crankshaft seals, Nope
    timing belt, Yes, obviously?!
    tensioner, Yes
rollers, I assume this means pulleys? If so, yes
thermostat, No reason to do this at the same time
all the thermostat gaskets, There aren't any - there is a rubber seal on the thermostat
    belts, Yes
coolant hoses, Only after an inspection suggests it
    radiator cap, Nope
timing cover seal, Not sure what this means - but probably Nope again!

Add to your list Water pump and make sure the tensioner has the pulley and the tensioner itself, they are different parts. There is no reason to do any other service items at the same time unless you fancy it. The only time you'll save is popping the bonnet!

At what mileage should the cam belt be changed?

    45000 miles.

There is a bit of debate about this, but that is my belief.

Yeah nick is right , 45,000 was the target when they first released the VR$ but later on the schedule was pushed out to 54,000

But in my eyes I would rather get it done every 45,000 than take the chance for an extra 9000 miles

You would still need the other bearing ,tensioner and waterpump so you are probably just as well to go with camskill and just have one cost for postage as the seller adds £3.50 for each additional item

timing cover seal is just the rubber seal around the cambelt cover. only replace if its damaged.

as for the thermostat, personally it really depends on how many k's the cars done. at work i usually suggest it at its 200,000km service (second camblet). reasoning for this is that since im doing the waterpump i do a full coolant flush so i change it as part of that.

if its something like and mx5 i replace the thermostat every time i do the cambelt because you got to pull it out anyway.

    just my 2 cents

Nick Mann, Does that ebay listing & this camskill tensioner have both the tensioner and the pulley as you mentioned or are they missing something?

The tensioner is the expensive bit. The second link in Peters post above. You may not NEED one, but unless you can take the car apart, then decide, then wait for one to be delivered, then it is worth having one available. The last cambelt I removed had a duff tensioner.

I would buy everything that Peter suggests from Camskill, plus what you linked to. (Obviously plus the belt!)

    Question

Is there any difference in pulleys, quality-wise? I saw a couple of adverts in a Jap Mag for super light weight or performance pulleys, surely they all do the same job? Camskills have always been reliable for me.
    Just wondering, cheers

the belys and tensioners are available from Blueprint and are good quality parts.
Blueprint can be got from most good car parts dealers.

update: bought the hydraulic tensioner, the tensioner pulley, the idler pulley, the timing belt & water pump from Camskill. £250 delivered to Ireland.
That's with a 10% discount on the blueprint parts which was everything except the Mitsi hydraulic tensioner which was £100!

All i need now is someone in Dublin to fit this for me without ruining my car. (:Yes I've been burnt before
I WILL NOT be going to a main dealers.
Any1 know anyone good? (I texted Nigel from Omar's post but got no reply)

In the UK, it's a rare car that dealers don't know about. I went to buy a heap of sump washers recently, and the guy on the parts desk said "What's a VR4?".

I guess Ireland is a similar if not worse story.
