    Invecs!!!!

OK id love a manual vr4 but there is something quite interesting about thius super intelligent gearbox that mimics and learns your driving patterns!

    but.......

what if i just wanna chill out and not use a shed load of fuel what if i just wanna relax and not take my car over 4k? does this mean the gearbox also becomes lazy and just wants to sit on the sofa and eat crisps?

also........ if i reset the ecu then kane the life out of the car will this speed up gear changes?

alot is written about the invecs system but who is actually gonna demonstrate this to the buyer? the greasy car salesman down your local mitsi garage who has a "carisma" as a company car? nah didnt think so either.

has anyone else actually noticed their own particular gearbox "adapt" to their own particular driving style?

    many questions here!

    Haven't noticed much anything "adapting"...

yes, it definitely adapts it's hold and preselection patterns. my wife says that whenever I've been driving her VR4, it feels "eager" like it is egging her on. likewise, the first time I put my fot down hard aftr she has been driving, it seems to need a moment to 'get off the sofa' but then quickly becomes sporty, preselecting and holding gears. It is adapting to your particuular gearbox all the time, too, compensating for wear, viscosity and temperature. I'd quite like it to recognise who gets in the car, either with a switch or key trannsponder, but generally after that first hesitant change where it psyches itself up, it's awesome: very DSG.

If you are driving steadyily the gearbox eventually learns this and changes gear at lower revs and so acceleration is not as rapid...

...if you then start to push on more and heavier on the throttle, the gearbox learns this and then holds onto gears so that acceleration is quicker...

...thats my experience of how it works, it takes quite a few miles before it learns your new style

It also adapts to your downhill driving style. Whether you use the brakes or engine braking.
I.e. it will keep the speed steady going downhill. It will change to lower gear if your car accelerates and you are not using brakes but if you start using brakes, it will stay in fifth as long as possible without stalling.
    That's what I have experienced.

I don't know about INVECs really. I think I might prefer a more standard auto (still with the manual shift option) that has the ability to select with a switch between say sport and economy modes. I'd also like a kick down, where there is a second level of travel on the accelerator pedal beyond the normal floor that dramatically downshifts the car for max acceleration. My old BMW had this - the 'warp speed mode' if you will.

Multilevel or 'inteligent' kick down Candee.
Depends how hard you hit the accel and what is your current speed, it may kick down to 4th, 3rd or even 2nd gear.

That's the problem, sometimes intelligent kickdown gets it wrong and you don't get ultra kickdown like you do on other galants with the throttle position sensor button under the accelerator.

I've never had that problem. Whenever I floor it, it kicks down to lowest possible gear. I.e. If the speed is around 50mph, it kicks down to 2nd gear.
But 'the button' is a bit more robust solution probably

You probably don't drive like a granny for hrs on end and then suddenly boot it like I do.
