Driving without insurance – you could pay with your home

Uninsured drivers could lose their property to pay for the damage they cause, if new proposals from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) go ahead.

The ABI thinks Britain should follow the example of France, where uninsured drivers are pursued for compensation. Offenders often end up losing property such as TVs, videos or even their house in order to compensate their victims.

In France the proportion of uninsured drivers is half the number it is in the UK.

The proposal from the ABI is part of a wider package, which would also include impounding the cars of uninsured drivers.

Estimates suggest that there are two million uninsured drivers in the UK. Statistics have shown that they are nine times more likely to be involved in an accident than drivers who are insured.

The ABI have sent their proposal to the Greenaway inquiry, which is looking at ways to clamp down on uninsured drivers.

Their submission says that many motorists think that they have a “compelling” financial incentive not to insure their cars. This is because insurance on average costs £350, but a fine for being uninsured is only £150.

The submission also states that: “It is of prime importance that the impact of being caught driving uninsured is sufficiently high to deter insurance evasion.”

In Australia, they have a good policy. As part of the yearly registration cost, you pay for 3rd party insurance. This means who you hit is covered, but if you have an accident you are not.

I would like this in NZ. Would reduce the overall premiums for full cover.
We work to live, and to live is to drive a VR-4, around corners at speed. But it costs see here
