    Fuel

This be mainly for the non turbo's in here.

What fuel do you use, and what fuel works best for your galant?

im a shell person through an through, but of late i wacked a tank of tescos own water in, only cos we got 5p off a liter.

from the recent mpg we recorded, tescos water seems to be better for the galant then the shell.
im gutted tbh as it tescos. lol

so im wondering what works best for other V6 monsters out there.

Mainly Shell V-Power and Tesco 99.

However, I put in Sainsburys 95 RON (no 97 RON available), as I had a 5p/litre off voucher. MPG seems better, but gauge not the most accurate so will have to wait for a full tank to see if my impression is correct.

I got nearly 38 m.p.g. (over about 150 miles) from the last lot of Sainsburys super unleaded.

The V6 loves higher octane and i get more power with it but nowadays she only gets tesco's finest 95.

Just regular 95 octane. It runs a lot quieter on Tescos 99 but I didn't notice any improvement in MPG, and with a 7% increase in cost it's not worth it for me. I've achieved over 41mpg on a motorway run with 95 so that's fine for me.

It was over 600 miles which included some driving around the city, on a trip down to exeter and back.

With my galants I tended to (and still do) use Shell. I found supermarket fuels much of a muchness with other petrol brands. The only standouts were shell (car felt a little perkier - not as much as with optimax, but better than others) and Esso (utter garbage. No power, no pull, no nothing. This happened 3 times at different esso stations, so I avoid like the plague now).

Other thing for me now is that I get 3% off shell fuel, and in my local area they are the same price as the supermarkets anyway.
It's been a crazy year, But through all the damage done,
I have turned and I have learned, To make next year a better one,

    Singing Oh I am home.

Nope, 70mph+ all the way there with the aircon on. It is a long journey sat at a fairly constant speed though (apart from having to overtake hundreds of racing lorries) and the V6 isn't at that high an RPM at those speeds.

EDIT: Just to add perspective, my day to day driving is a few short trips to and from work (about 4 miles away) so my normal fuel economy is about 26-28mpg

You want to put the best fuel you can in it. V Power we have tested against Tescos 99 on the dyno in the past and found less knock protection with the Tesco stuff. This comes down to the addative package. Ie the one in V power is very good.

Ultimately the octane rating is going to tell you how much the fuel is going to resist knock.

As far as the imports go, the stock map in the ecu is set up for 100 octane fuel, so you need to put as close to that as you can in it. The UKDM cars will have a different map that will be for 95 probably.

If you put lower octane fuel in it, then the knock prevention isnt there. The ecu's base map will contain too much timing and the engine will start to knock. In NA applications, because the ultimate cylinder pressure isnt massively high that knock will not be horrendously destructive as it might in a turbo engine, but it will be hammering away at the head gasket, piston ringlands and the valves. In a turbo car, since the peak cylinder pressures are higher (ie at a bar of boost, there is gonna be double the mass of air in there- well actually there wont but then we start talking about ic efficiency and i loose the point totally) knock can be much much more damaging. We've all seen the ringlands blown off right?

In response to knock, the ecu will back out timing, thus reducing power and damage pottential. (on the turbo cars it will try to use the boost solenoid to back out boost and will dump fuel to cool the charge)

Ultimately if its knocking, even without the timing pull, its losing power, and the actions of the ecu will only drop power further.

So, dont think of it in terms of MPG or anything, think of it in terms of minimising risk to the engine, and maximising available power output.

    Cheers,

    Ben.

Is this really going to be an issue in UK spec non-turbo V6s though?
