Eye in the sky to combat insurance fraud

Motor insurance fraud cost the UK more than £1.2 billion last year with an estimated 10% of all claims being false.

But one insurer, esure, is hoping to buck this trend by introducing state-of-art digital imaging, backed up with satellite navigation, to get to the truth about millions of car accidents.

The Electronic Location Viewing System (ELVIS) enables claims staff to zoom in on aerial photographs of sections of roads or junctions – right down to road marking level.

The system can even ‘place’ cars onto a photograph of a road in positions that replicate those of an accident. It can also pinpoint disputed road signs and distances down to the nearest six inches.

The new technology has been adopted by the company in a bid to clamp down on the increasing number of false claims submitted each year.

It is hoped the technology will help dramatically speed up the payment of valid claims while helping staff to spot potentially exaggerated or fraudulent claims early.

esure also believe it will help to reduce the cost of insurance premiums in the future.
