it doesnt run rough thats the thing, it starts, drives idles, just every 3 seconds there is a slight misfire then its gone then 3 seconds its back... i can hear something knocking down the bottom of the engine though, might put it up on the ramps and see if its the something down there...misfire sounds like someone is just forcing clean air out the exhaust
.
id ring mitsubishi and ask them whats their recommended best way to deal with badly behaved cars!
Still here somewhere........

I have found that the best thing to use to check for oil leaks is carb cleaner.
bear with me and i will explain,
the carb cleaner is is use to clean the area, and it blasts the drit and oil off the car, and because it is so volotile solvent it drys almost instantly.
then it is easier to see where the leak is coming from.
it is power steering rack as mine leaks a bit.
also it is a good idea to get a mechanics stethascope (few quid from Ebay) to listen to the exact point where the noises are coming from.
Bye for Now!
When you say you can hear a "dry cycle", are you sure it's not overfuelling?
Could the noise you're hearing be a backfire?
That reminds me of the 'Will it Blend?' viral campaign - BrilliantOriginally Posted by miller
no its not a back fire, theres no pop, it just missing, and i have no idea what it is, not over fuelling, starts when your below 1500rpm
edit: so the consesus is that i should go a crush my car then P*****!
Check your cam/crank/IFS/MAF sensors and their plugs.
checked all the plugs on the sides of the engine, i have checked pretty much everything
fault codes
ecu reset
pipe work attached
jubillee clips done up tight
oil in front and rear spark plugs
connections on coil packs
connections left side of engine bay,
connections right side of engine bay
maf connection
airbox seated correctly with clean filter
tension on aux belts
cleaned inlet with some carb cleaner
changed the brake vacuum pipe,
checked virtually everything i can think of
im stumped i cant think of anything else it could be
Could be the torque converter? being stationary with foot on the brake in D will load it up somewhat.
I'm nearly with u on this 1 Ken..Originally Posted by Kenneth
From his early descriptions it sounds gearbox related.. Even though he says the noise seems like it's coming from the other side of the car
If it was a manual car.. The 1st description would have pointed straight to Clutch release bearing .. So deffo gearbox, torque con related...
Sound has a funny way of not starting from where you think...Originally Posted by WODJNO
It has to be from the drive train if it makes funny noises with foot on the brake. It COULD be the transfer case.
I know the manual gearbox has a hatch you can remove to look inside without removing it, does the auto have this?
Also could be worth taking off the transfer case and checking it.
But the transfer box is all fixed gearing isn't it ?Originally Posted by Kenneth
A problem there would't make it jolt every 5 seconds while stationary in gear and on the brake ?
Sounds like oil isn't getting where it should be, when it should be .. Maybe an air lock thats moving around and may also be creating the dry noise he can here ?
A couple of broken teeth might. especially if one is on a shaft from the centre diff. Being under load from the torque converter would mean one shaft just just clunks around.Originally Posted by WODJNO
Very unlikely, but would be in the correct area.
I would much more likely put it in the gearbox/torque converter though.
Could be time to do a manual conversion Kyle...
I suppose one way to test the transfer case would be to do tight circles at low speed. if something is wrong, you are bound to hear some noises.
the noise is only there on cold start up, and is coming from right hand side of engine bay. as for gearbox i think i can rule it out, because it does it PRND all gears, yet its not there at higher revs. Also made a check of the to see if TC seal was leaking when i did oil change, and gearbox is dry as a bone underneath
Ruling stuff out is a bad thing to do, you need to check everything, no matter how unlikely.
First thing to do is to find out EXACTLY where the noise is coming from.
You know about using a long screwdriver to "hear" mechanical noise?
I would suggest you use that next cold start to find out the source chunk of metal. Once you have narrowed it to something like engine, gearbox or transfer case it should be easier to diagnose.
i have narrowed it done to engine and not gearbox, as the missfire sounds and feels like its coming from the rear bank, and if it was the TC then it would be there through all the rev range, and would be worse the higher the more the wheels were rolling
