    Canterbury speed crackdown

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/thepress/4816195a6009.html

I notice in this article about the crackdown on speedsters in Canterbury that the police will have "no tolerance" especially near schools. Does that mean you could get a ticket for going even 1 km/h above the speed limit? In Aussie the Victorian police do that (all over not just near schools) and it isn't fair, because car speedometers aer not that accurate and your indicated speed could easily be off by a few km/h.

Jan this was in the news for all of NZ a while ago, I agree that around schools there should be zero tolerance. Yes in Aussie there is zero tolerance, and it is fair enough, most cars come out of the factory and the speedo shows a couple of km/h below the actual speed, it is only when you affect the rolling diametre of the wheels that this becomes an issue, since you can't really do this in Aussie it doesn't become an issue.

Bear in mind that if you are 1km over the speed limit here in NZ you can be booked regardless, however there is a "guide line" that the cops will give you unto 10km/h lee way.

Actually it is the same as the 10-15km/h bracket. it used to be $80 but I think it has gone up now.

my mate got a $40 ticket for doing 54 in a 50 zone...

anyway i think it crazy! personally i think it is safer to do 4km/h over the speed limit then to be staring at the spedo and not paying attention to the road!

    Yup.

We all need to get rid of politicians who think arbitrary speed limits are a good idea.

I quite enjoyed my trip with the radar detector down to Palmy and back up. It meant I could actually concentrate on the road rather than looking at the speedo every 5 seconds. I was definetely the better driver, being able to focus on the road.
