We put the car up on axle stands yesterday and as per Amsoil's advice to Blackpool Kev, added a bottle of engine flush to the gearbox. Started the car and it ran normally through all the gears shifting up and down in automatic and tiptronic modes. We did this for about 20 minutes then did a full flush to new Amsoil ATF. We then road tested the car and got about 5 miles before the car went back into limp home mode. It seems very strange that it would be fine on axle stands and then not work on the road. To me this rules out an oil pump fault. We did remove a electrical connection and refit that before the flush so it may still be electrical. I will hopefully get another loom shortly. I have tried two other ecu's and it is exactly the same with both of them. Still looking to buy Mo's gearbox once he gets it out of the car.

Any advice gratefully accepted. We really thought it was going to work when it worked so well on the axle stands, all the shifts were fine.

Try it again and see if you can get 10 minutes before trip. Then try it again and go for 15 or 20. You will need to somehow get about 200 miles on the box to maximise the cleaning of the plates by the Amsoil ATF. Do Not give up ... yet.
If you have a problem with getting Amsoil just contact me on 07949 944523 email don@performanceoilsltd.co.uk or web at http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/

We tried this Don as we think if it's not a solenoid sticking then it may be a valve. It has been running amsoil atf since we relpaced the seal but when you mentioned using the engine cleaner to clean the plates we thought it would be worth a try and every thing was looking good while on the ramps. Before that it hadn't been out of limp home mode for a good while. I'll get it back on the ramps and see if it will start working again and cycle through the gears.
It was the most progress we have made with it so far but I expect we may still change the box and open this one up to see what has gone wrong.
