    WTB: Legnum VR4 wanted

Hi, I am new to this forum. I am looking for a VR4 legnum estate. If all Legnums are estates I apologise, I am still learning. I have been offered a mint, 57,000 kms car in silver, tiptronic, Evo 8 wheels but apart from that totally standard. I owner since it was imported. Around £3,000.

What should I be looking for? I have heard talk that the later cars without AYC are better. Did they all have the rear spoiler around the rear window? I would prefer a manual but they appear to be like 'hens teeth'.

Any help + assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Ken.

Hey Ken welcome aboard CVR4, yes Manuals are like hens teeth so you will pay more. The 3k sounds a good price, just make sure all the fluid services are up to date. If not budget a couple of hundred quid off the asking price to get these done asap

There is a red maunal in WRC importers in Brum.

All legnums are estates, when in saloon mode they are all called Galants. Later cars without AYC are the Type V.

Dont despair on the tiptronic though, i love it and am a total convert. Having never owned an auto before i thought the novelty would wear off me quite quick but its the total opposite. I love the auto/tip combo more and more each day.

    Happy hunting

    Nice car...
Hi, yes I have seen the ads for that one, do not like the wheels, (small point). I am a race car engineer & have my own workshop so fluid changes etc are not a problem. Is the tiptronic anything like the Evo 10? I have worked with these cars on the launch & on track days. I am quite au fait with the EVO's as I have done a lot of circuit tuition for Mitsubishi on their 'EVO' track days. Just want to know of any pitfalls in buying a Legnum.

Which bits wear out, are the engines/gearboxes good, any gremlins in the electronics etc etc.

    Regards.

    Ken.

    Welcome,
Auto boxes can be temperamental and expensive to repair, if they have not been looked after.
Rear diff is AYC as in EVO, again possible probs if they have not been serviced regularly.
If you change the fluids at the specified times they last a lot longer

I Don't think you can get later model VR4's without AYC rear diff

If you are pushing it, (track days etc) you may want to use a synthetic ATF like Amsoil, which handles the higher temps much better, and possibly fit a trans cooler.

Inner edges of tyres get abused a lot (4x4 thing)
Plastic engine cover doesn't last long (most people lean on them by accident while under the bonnet lol)
front tow covers dissapear quite quickly also!

    Engines are good

If you can get one with a service record then you have a better starting point.

I am sure others will add info, cheers Louis

I have been told that the auto box is the same as the evo 7 GTA. I haven't seen proof, but I think that it is very likely anyway. The manuals are an evo 5spd box with a different bell housing.

Good luck with your search! If you want advice/opinions on a particular car, post it up and we'll try to tell you the good and the bad.

    Question

Having looked at just about every ad in the UK & some in Japan there are 1 or 2 questions I need to ask, I am sure you all know the answers but I am still learning.

What is the difference on a face lifted model, when were they introduced? What is the difference on a type S car. Many I have seen have the speedos in KM's still. I understand that this is illegal in the UK, how or who do I use to change it? Many cars have the mileage recorded in KMS but the speedo is changed to read MPH, is the mileage then recorded in miles or kilometers?

There seems to be so many discrepancies within the adverts that I am more than a little confused!!!

Facelifts start at S reg. Late 1998. Not many differences except cosmetic. The only other differences of note are:
Recaros became an option (Only available on the Super VR4 previously)
Hub carriers can take Evo Brembos, prefacelifts can't.
All VR4's became 280 bhp, prefacelift autos were 260.

The speedo in kph is not illegal in the UK if the car was imported after its 10th birthday. Changing it is relatively easy - less than £40 for the converter and an hour or two to fit. Most conversions don't change the odometer reading. It will have counted up to the conversion in km and after the conversion in miles. It is possible to change the odometer reading to read in total miles, but it is rare to find this has been done.

    Hope that helps.

    Nick.
