Actually last time a couple of us took a different route (in error as I missed the Spa turn off) and ended up going near Kerpen and then down (E31 I think). It actually turned out to be a good route and got us there 10 mins before Wayne who went the usual route.

    Oi!

(Says the Supra driver who couldn't catch me at Combe last year )

In my defence, I did make two wrong turnings after the point when we split up and we couldn't get to the hotel the way the sat nav was directing us due to a road closure at the F1 circuit at the moment.

Couple this with the fact that I stayed within the speed limits the whole way you will see why I was a few minutes behind

Your memory is going as well sir

The Usual Suspects dispatched you readily last year - I have a video

It was the year before when you started at the very front and 10 minutes later, despite us starting at the very back we blitzed 11 VR4's. I seem to remember you were saved by an early chequered flag - I'd say that was more than catching you ???

We have done several routes to/from the Ring - planned and otherwise, but we still enjoy convoying the Gerolstein route as I call it. I suppose its good that there are various ways to go

And if you get lost in Europe - all roads lead to Nurburg don't they

The temptation factor is now at maximum!

Add to that Amy has said I can go if we can afford it!

Er, um. I suppose I could avoid eating for the next 5 months... which on the plus side would improve my power to weight ratio!

Sod affording it, if I chuck in a remap for the Leon, I think that could be a winner!

I assume you mean a remap for the Leon as a sweetener for your lovely lady .. not because you are going to take that over the Leggie?

Yes, the sweetener. Although the fuel saving alone would probably pay for the remap!! I had to use it the other week for a trip to Lincolnshire, where I was a little behind schedule, so had to make, er, 'progress'. Still returned 44mpg!

    Hmm, more thinking required...

Don't think mate, get it booked ! The ferry is a mere £37 at the moment, and a single room at the Motorsport is 50 euros a night

In fact, if we can talk Nick and Rich into coming then we can have a committee meeting there too

Nev (and anyone else considering coming)

I thought some costing estimates may help you make a decision. This is based on starting at Dover, and a Euro exchange rate of 1.07:

Ferry - Dover to Dunkirk and return (Norfolkline) = £37
Fuel to and from the ring (approx 600 miles @ 25mpg) = £136 (based on 1.35euros per litre)
    Hotel - 3 nights @ 50 euros a night = £140 (single room)
    8 lap ring ticket @ 145 euros = £135
    8 laps of fuel @ 10mpg = £80
    3 days of food/drink @ £50 = £150 (can be done for far less)

    Total = £678

Of course, this does not include any extra laps, the exchange rate may improve, you may want to buy goodies out there, things you may need to get before you go (e.g. warning triangle etc) etc etc. Just a good starting point.

But, compare this to a UK trackday:

    Trackday: £175-200
    Fuel: £75-100
    Hotel (1 night) - £55
    Food/Drink (1 day/night) - £50

    That's £350 to £400 for just 1 day !

Hope this helps in some way.

And you may also want to consider European breakdown cover which is usually around £40 for the duration of the trip.

Although, I think I read somewhere that ADAC now explicitly exclude the Nurburgring and it's surrounding area. When I looked into it a few weeks ago this appears to be the case for many of these policies now. I went with Direct Line for the last trip as there was no mention of excluding the 'Ring in their policy small print.

Course you can save on breakdown cover and forget all about(as I did on the last trip ) despite having used direct line every time before!
