I've always wondered why Australian domain names always end in .com.au - why don't they end in co.au?

Because australians wouldn't have understood why it was different to the rest of the dot coms.

maybe its because australians can spell words that are longer than 2 letters

So do you have .ac.au and .gov.au?

.co.uk indicates a company or organisation (although this is widely used for family domains etc too)
.ac.uk indicates an academic institute
.gov.uk indicates govornment pages

Germany has .de

Latvia has .lv

Ryan: It's parallel Evolution. Some bugger somewhere just registered the root domains they thought would make sense at the time without really checking what everyone else was doing or why.

The internet is absoloutely riddled with inconsistencies like this, and most of them have no reason better than "It was like that in the 80's".
