Thumbs down its a sad sad day......

Before i begin, i have to make it clear, i know nothing about cars and engines apart from how to switch them on and off........

My legnum has been for an mot and has had some troubles with emmissions. first they found the exhaust had a leak somewhere, which has been sorted.... but its down hill from here.

Upon its return to my friends workshop the test centre still failed it saying there was oil in the emissions(?)...... He checked the compression and found cylinder 1 is running at 8psi....cylinder 2 at 6psi, and said somthing like my rings are knackred(?). Im guessing thats not good??

About2 weeks after i bought the car the power steering pump died, so i had it replaced. Then a few weeks later, the rad popped. So i left the car sat outside for a few months till now. Have now had another rad fitted, but the power steering isnt working on low revs even though it worked before, and when we towed it.

Im not sure what to do with the car now, my friends gonna get it through the mot for me with a new cat so it will at least have 12 months on it..... but i dont want to screw anyone over by not saying anything about the engine, as im not a git. Whats the car worth with these problems as i dont have the money to pay some1 to fix it. The cars a 1997 legnum (bog standard) with cream leather int 106k.

any info or advice(or offers)is much appriciated........

Sorry to hear this Pete, but if you know the prices these are fetching when they're in full working order, you can probably guess that the price for a non-fully-working is going to be quite a bit lower. Perhaps £1,000 or so? Might be of most interest to someone who would then part it out.

Could be rings causing that but at figures that low I'm surprised it doesn't misfire. They could be just coked up but it does sound like an engine strip at best. As to value, may be best to see what people are prepared to offer in its current form. A replacement engine is not too difficult or even that expensive with members on here able to supply (and fit)

Ah buddy thats crap , sorry to hear your troubles thought your ps pump was the nd of the issues

your in a tough spot as the cost to fix maybe a lot more than the cost to replace the engine . Supprised that you have not noticed that two pistons are donw on pressure

Top of the head figures are £700 ish for an engine and around £300 for fitting (+ fuilds) .

The car's value in it's current form is probably high hundreds

like i said i havent driven it in months so i wouldnt know about any misfires. that price doesnt seem too bad..... had allocated around that much for any improvements that would arise on the mot. was gonna get brakes sorted too. Do you know who can do the work??

If the gearbox was working ok before then it should be ok and would be an ideal opportunity to change the fluids completely, I assume it's an auto. Many members have found Amsoils auto fluid very good indeed.

Do the infamous oil seal while it's out too. Only a couple of quid or so but would require box out to fit anyway

If you have oil in the emissions then its likely to have a high CO reading and a replacement CAT will not resolve that.

My first VR4 - '97 Legnum Dark Green & mean ...it was love at first sight - now sold

    Burning oil affects HC figures.
CO figures rather indicate overfuelling or running lean.
