    BOV recommendations please!

What are people's thoughts on the stock Dump Valve? Is it worth replacing, and if so, what with? I've used vent to atmosphere before (Sard R2D2), and whilst the pops, whistles and flames are entertaining, the fuelling and driveability went out of the window and I ended up fabricating a recirc for it to bring things into line.

What are other peoples' experiences and recommendations for aftermarket BOVs?

I've tried a couple of VTA BOVs on mine, as well as on the Evo, and they definitely affect the way it behaves on lift off. It's not all that dreadful on the VR4 Tiptronic, as I suspect the autobox <> ECU relationship smooths out a lot of the problems. Occasionally you'll catch it at half throttle, get a little psht and the car will hesitate, confused by the differences between TPS and MAF signals.

All that being said, I've still got a forge VTA on there, so it can't be that annoying It notices very occasionally.

The factory one is generally considered adequate, though if you're planning to up the boost it starts to let the side down. A cheap factory recirc off someones Evo will fit straight in as a replacement, and hold a lot more pressure.

Vent to atmosphere? I assume so, as the R2D2 needs a custom recirc making.

I know the SSQ can be recirc'ed and is known as a decent piece of kit regardless of how it's set up - how was yours set up?

What pressure do you think they start to leak at. Can they hold 15psi?

It was a nightmare on the S14, especially on partial throttle higher up the revs - eg at steady throttle round a big curve - it would flip between on and off boost and making driving hideous. Once recirc'ed the problem was cured

That's good to know. What sort of pressure does the stock VR4 recirc start leaking, and how much boost is the Evo recirc good for?

    Of all the bov i used over times i prefere;

    recirc - forge
    vta - r2d2

I hate the normal vta sound these days, its 'weedy', but the r2d2 is quite deep and harsh, much more suiting...

I still prefer a good metal recirc these days tho

What boost controller are you using? Spiking isn't good

Is it time for me to throw the spanner in the works again regarding this matter?

I run a Nomad VTA, and for what you pay (around the £100 mark) it sounds pretty decent, doesnt leak and doesnt negatively effect performance.

The HKS yes may sound nice if you like the squeak, but they do have a tendency to leak, and they are also a lot of money for what they actualy are.

End of the day its up to the individual what they want their car to sound like, but unless its leaking it will not effect performance either way.

Just for the record though, i used to have a forge recirc without any issues, but had to get rid due to the lack of place for it to recirc into now.

mines a manual one and only spikes slightly when full throttle upshifting usually spikes at 13 psi, running 12psi boost as a rule. My dump valve seems to react very quick and give a nice whistle when it does so, not loud but you can hear it iykwim

The answer to 'vent-to-atmosphere' BOV over-fueling at throttle lift off and the like, is one of these little things (see picture attached), designed to alleviate this very issue.............

Not a complete fix but fools the ECU into fueling less..........

Do a Google search on HKS EIDS for more details.

Surprised I've not seen or heard people mention these little devices before.

The GFB stealth FX is v a good solid and reliable piece of kit . It's very well made, fully serviceable and as mentioned in Wodjno's current For sale thread HERE. I ran one of these on my last VR. Made sure it was open for the pistonheads meets/tunnel runs (just to make sure the liner's and scooby's dint get steal the show ) and when I got fed up of VTA afterwards, just twisted the BOV body to fully recirc.

I also ran with the evo 8 stock metal recirc valve and this was superb too on the VR. It held perfectly well when boosted up to 1.5 bar on my pal's evo previously.

I have an Evo metal one fitted that despite being a re-circ makes a very loud but higher pitched noise at change. It's enough to get peoples' heads turning. The only issue I've had since fitting it is that you get a lurch on lift-off from acceleration, particularly in 5th.

The Profec E-01 has an idle smoothing facility so I assume this does the same thing as the EIDS unit?
