    bang bang bang rattle!

    well....

pulled up at the lights yeaterday... engine cut out..
started it back up, drove a bit further
pulled up at a round about... engine cut out...
    started it back up..
    bang bang bang rattle rattle!!!

oh dear! so while waiting for an AA flat bed to come we decided to look into it..

knocking sounded like it was coming from the back bank and higher up so off came everything! inlet mani etc. rocker cover..
inside the cover and the cams were covered in like a siliconey tar.. like burnt oil residue! like its never had an oil change ever in its life!

now i did an oil change or 2 b4. i know shaun did too. so its either who ever had the car before or oil starvation and the lines/jackets have got blocked up!

anyway.. no other signs of damage, pistons appear to be there so we assume bottom end has gone!

now its what to do.. was gonna sell the car anyway (as to my other thread - doh) so whats more cost efficient? breaking it? putting in another engine then selling? or selling as it is? not good at all

    Ouch! Not good timing.

Financially your best bet is probably breaking it

That said, it really depends on what the bottom end damage is. It sounds like a big end has gone, which most likely means the rod is damaged and the engine needs a total rebuild.

Selling a damaged VR4 seems to be a loser: if you can persuade anyone to buy it, they seem to go for about £500, unfortunately.

    Really sorry to hear this.

i feel for you mate mine did the same but a touch more dramatic, involving a 4ish inch hole in the sump pan and a small oil burn off fire

    bugger....

ummm well do you really want to sell the car?
if you dont then i suggest a engine swap?
i did this to my old love... car and its not as pricy as you may think! (£500, that included all tha parts, oils etc..., hire of a engine crain and a doner car that was rust full, along with 20hours work time).
okies it was no vr4, but still, and engein swap is an engine swap and you will have fun doing it as well as learning loads more then you thought you already did!
depends on who you know, mind!

if you do want to get shot, the i suggest breaking, you will get alot more that way then if you was to sell it as it is.

best of luck either way mate!

SO gutted about this we bought the legnum coz we have a 5yr old and had a baby on the way! Now i have two children who i need to take on a school run (we live miles away from school) and i cant fit the pram into my GT which was sorn, uninsured and no mot off the road.

I was almost in tears yesterday pulled over whilst everyone came to help us and i swear every modified car went past us smirking, even a ferarri and an audi r8 went by!!

Just cant believe our luck may as well have just thrown 3k out the window! Hope we can sort something out.

Steelie600, thankyou for your kind offer will let you know if we need any help! We need decide which route to go for.

if need any particular but from a bottom end, give me a shout. i have one sat in the back garden ready to stip down.
Unfortuneatly it did come from a cam belt snapper and the pitons have small cresent marks on them (could be cleaned up) were the valves came in to contact with them, i don't know if this would have done any damage to it but if you need any bits give me a shout.
e.g. pitons, rods, crack, i would not have thought anything else would be usable. but i would not have though shells would cost that much.

i bought the bottom end for s**t & giggles, to see what was in there and how easy it is to stip down. you could even use it for practice if you wanted to. to see if you wanted giving it a go yourself.
I was keeping the bottom end just in case something like this happened to me and could salvage the parts i needed from it but you sound like you are in more need than i at this point.
so as i say if need it or just bits give me a shout.

    Bye for Now!

OMG! That is one dirty engine.
I am guessing that there is some crap in an oilway to one of the bearings which has caused oil starvation.

It does look like its had a lack of proper maintenance during its lifetime.

'97 Manual Legnum in silver with some subtle mods

My first VR4 - '97 Legnum Dark Green & mean ...it was love at first sight - now sold

lol nice isnt it! yea we assume oil starvation has caused the head to overheat along with taking out the bottom end as it goes. i'll take the other rocker cover off too some point this week and see what thats like inside too

I've never seen anything quite like it. I almost want to drive up to see it for myself like some sort of x-files trip! Hope you can get a new engine. Should be able to get one for £500. I'm sure there are plenty of willing hands on here to lend a help in wnatever way they can to get a fellow leggie back on the road.
    Good luck guys

I would almost say it looks like the oil has combusted? What does the contents of the sump look like?

Is it possible for the oil to ignite and burn in the oil-ways? I can't think of a reason why not, though it's not a nice image!?
