Tomorrow morning at 1100 we mark the 91st anniversary of the cessation of hostilities between German and Allied forces during World War One.
I implore all New Zealanders, Australians, South Africans, British, to take a minute or two at 1100 tomorrow morning to remember your great grandfathers that paid the Ultimate Sacrifice 91 years ago.
The First World War was a horrible war - as all wars are but this war saw the advent of powerful weapons which had never been employed on a massive scale. Weapons such as the machine gun, the aircraft, massed artillery, the tank and lastly but not least - gas.
I've lived in New Zealand for the past 5 years and it never ceases to choke me up to see how well their dead are honoured. It pains me that such courtesies are rarely afforded to South African soldiers by the current government.
I ask you all to take a minute and just consider that the colleague, boss or subordinate next to you might 91 years ago, have been your partner in a foxhole. It's easy to say that that won't happen again, however history tells us that the future is never certain.
Look at these men. 91 years ago, they were ordinary people like you or I. Treat everyone as you would like to be treated. Respect others - avoid conflict, avoid war.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)
