Is it just me or is it confusing about the way power output is quoted?

we seem to be using ps and bhp

are they both the same?

I had assumed that they are not

AFAIAA the recent INSERT INTO post VALUES (99 0nwards) uk models were quoted as 276 bhp

and the jap imports of similar age quoted as 280 bhp

I have a jap spec sheet for my car/year model and it states 280 bhp

where/how does ps fit in with bhp?

I don't know what the abreviation is but I'm sure someone does, I believe it is just the way some countries recognise it, we say bhp they say PS?
Since 280PS is also 280BHP...:confused:
Torque is different again.

276 is the accurate output where as 280 is written as general as far as I know.

Power Conversion: ps to bhp

1.0 Japanese PS = 0.98632 BHP
50 PS = 49.3 BHP
100 PS = 98.6 BHP
120 PS = 118.4 BHP
150 PS = 147.9 BHP
180 PS = 177.5 BHP
200 PS = 197.3 BHP

Therefore 280PS = 276.22BHP

I was also told by a Mercedes guy that kW is the common power output used by most countries now and only the UK really uses BHP anymore - just what he said though.

Yes if you searsh mobile.de - the german 'autotrader' type site it is kw use for power figures

confusing that tabel mentions japanese ps yet japanese data sheet I have, although it is in english, does use bhp and state car produces 280 bhp
