Sorry But did you just say that your drove the car home in limp mode knowing you had no ATF ?

Potentially your torque converter seal. Only a £13 seal, but another £350 worth of labour/oils to change it.

i got some fluid from the garage to get it home, i didn't have far to go. only a few miles to go it wasn't worth calling rac out. would i have damaged it anymore by doing this?

Depends where the fuild escaped from , which side did you swap the hub carrier on , just wondering if you had not seated the driveshaft properly and it leaked under pressure

Could be the TC seal as Nick and Andy said

Yeah that sound about right & thats if a friendly member that knows what there doing does it for you. The Mitsu stealer up here in Aberdeen would charge you over £500.

Gutted for you as I know how this feels.

swapped the rear drivers side. as far as i know it was seated properly. and it seems that the smoke was coming from the engine bay area so i'm guessing it was leaking near the front

Ah ok rear would have no effect on the g'box , when it is light have a look in the top right hand side near the battery for two pipes in a loop , one may have spilt .

if if not look under the car just to the left of the center member inbetween the engine and gearbox there is plate which you can remove and if there is fuild in there then it is the TC

Its very likely the TC seal gone.

If run at low fluid level or dry, it will quickly destroy the internals.

If you are lucky, the gearbox will be OK, but they are very fussy about which ATF they need.

I hope you can sort it relatively painlessly, but if its the TC seal the gearbox has to come out to replace it.

It sound like the TC seal John. The ATF hitting the hot downpipes & making the smoke. Thats what happend with mine.
