44's would maybe be a bit on the soft side to be honest. 66's should be fine, infact more than fine.

With regards to discs cracking and such like, grooved and drilled do help to disapate heat better, but you do run the risk of cracking (only under excessive breaking for a prelonged period of time i must stress).

As has been said, stock discs will be fine to be honest, but what you would find that noone ever talks about, is having backing plates between the pad and the caliper made out of some highly thermaly insulating material. It aids the prevention of boiling the fluid.

Decent fluid will also help. Motul RBF 600 is the way forward, unless you fancy spending a fortune on castrol SRF.

I was talking to a company at the autosport show that will do a carbon backed pad that is sutible for road use. the original design was for indy cars to reduce unsprung weight and to act as a thermal barrier to save the fluid

Used 1144's on Focus ST and worked well

Other owners reported similar satisfaction and many of those ST's were uprated to 289 bhp

Yes, and the ST is a heavy futher mucker...

    ...needing XL tyres...

...and hopefully mentioning power was to show that brakes were coping with slowing such a car...

If these things are not a guidance as to the effectiveness of the 1144's...

What do the ST's weigh out of interest? A chap I know has just had his upped to 270bhp with a GGR remap, he's over the moon with it but I have my reservations about that many ponies coming through the front wheels.

But maybe 1144's will not be good enough for the vr-4...

May depend on driving style/use of brakes...?

2005 ST weighs in at Kerb weight 1317 kg 2903 lb

Compared to the last time my Legnum was weighed, which was more than 1700 kg, slight difference in my opinion.

Yes it seems the VR-4 is an even heavier beast...

Guess it depends on how relevant for comparison is speed/amount of power going through front wheels, nose heavy vehicle and braking required...

These factors were tested by a number of enthusiastic ST owners in the Eifel Mountains

Pads seemed to cope adequately but maybe the weight/power/speed/braking requirements are not comparable with VR-4 to allow recommendation of 1144's

To be fair im not slating the 44's, but just that you will find they run out earlier on a vr4 than they would on a ST. Having said that, I had 66's in a car that weighed 850kg and was only ever driven in anger, i would never have put in the 44's after using the 66's. The 66's are superior in every way, combine that with low cost for the vr4..... no contest.

It is horses for courses, but in my humble experience why settle for a lesser product if the financial saving is minimal?

If cost difference is minimal and 66's do not require lots of heat/work before they are effective then, IMHO also, they are a good choice...

But really, how much for each of the Mintex, for VR-4, F & R?

to be fair i use blue print discs and pads, cheap as chips, direct oe parts for the pads, and oe copy for the discs but very good quality, and i also use dot 5.1 fluid. Had my brakes so hot theyve been on fire, and still no fade, had to press the pedal a touch harder but not fading.

    would recommend to anyone.

On actual actual fire!?? That would worry me, given that they're made of flame retardant material!
