    Question VR4 TD03 service kit

Following on from this thread: http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47426

Who would be interested in a TD03 service kit for our tired ickle Tubs ?
Many of our Tubs have had either 100000 miles of abuse or are upto 14years old

I know it will be dependant on price, but just putting the feelers out before i decide how much leg work i'm going to invest

    Cheers

Seems eminently sensible to me : it's not a question of "IF" they fail, but "When", especially once you start turning up the boost target.

Glen, I made contact with a company at the autosport show called Zage turbo who specialize in mitsu turbo's they do have the tdo3 listed and they have 1 in stock and ready to ship. it may be worth contacting them directly and seeing if they can do a rebuild kit, they seemed quite interested when i told them how many members cvr4 has over here, its quite a sizable market now for a not so popular turbo.

they remake stuff too, they did make their own upgrades for the tdo4 etc ranges, so there is no reason why not for these ickle things.

I'd be interested in a fitted on exchange basis, again dependant upon price and maybe after the summer period too.

Service/Refurb kit is a good idea, so ...

given my experience with the turbos...

I would say yes to parts 9-12...

    Or maybe a no...

I have to admit my experience is only with increased angular adjustment of the control lever distant from the rotating pressure production centre...

9,10,16,17,33,21,15,19,20,23,4,23 and probably 11 should all be replaced.

10 and 12 both need to be inspected for wear and ideally balance a decision made as to whether to replace or not: Likewise section 8 needs to be inspected and (ideally) crack and pressure tested. It will also need to be hot-tanked in most cases, and if you're doing the job properly, shot blasted.

26 should be checked, and replaced dependant on performance and condition. I have no idea what the correct parameters are, so best bet is to order a new one and do some comparisons. Fresh grease should be applied at the top of the arm.

Generally it's worth replacing 5 and 78 as a cheap precaution, though it's not always neccesary.

9 will be an evil beggar to get right, and obviously you'll need the correct torque settings, assembly temps and ideally oil bath it prior to shipping.

On relection Steve, that sounds right...

Well it must be, you said lots of numbers, mentioned crack/pressure testing, shot blasted, parameters, grease, precaution, torque settings, assembly temps and oil...

Glad we have some knowledgeable people here...

    Thanks for your input Steve

So if a Kit Complete with Parts Numbers 2 though to 12, plus 78 + 5 could be made available for a reasonable price .. Then it would be best to just replace them all ?

Turbo rebuilds are a bit like engine rebuilds - you need to decide at the start how good a job you're intending to do.

Perhaps it would be best to do it this way:

    Turbo Service Kit : 9,16,17,33,21,15,19,20,23(2),4,11,13 - Around £50.
Turbo Refurbish Kit: above + 16,10,12,78,5,28 - Costs a lot more as you're replacing the turbine and compressor wheels. If doing this, the housings need to be carefully inspected.

The Service kit stops it wearing out and losing oil and damaging the shaft. It won't, however, fix any damage to the turbo, especially that associated with damage to either the shaft or compressor or turbine wheels.

    Better?

    er......2 > 12?
Not sure those items are much use as it excludes the fluid bearings, doesn't it? Which are the bits that wear the most! Also, 2 - 12 includes a new compressor housing and circlip......neither of which I've known to wear excessively.

Not trying to be difficult - just make sure you get a sensible price!
16,17,33,21,15,19,20,23 are the most important bits, (I think) as they're the bits that usually fail. They should also be the cheapest.

And the shaft....but that's getting on for "new turbo" prices I'd imagine.
