WTB: AYC or SAYC rear diff

I was at Nick Mann's last weekend and, on draining the gear oil in the diff, about half a litre of ATF came out first!
I'm the first UK owner of my car and Nick has previously said that the diff has been opened and re-sealed at some point.
So I'm on the look out for a rear diff in good nick before mine goes 'bang'.
Haven't decided whether to go for SAYC yet but I suppose whatever's available will help me to decide.
Please let me know what you've got for sale, how many miles on it, if you can deliver or if collection is required and how much £££.
I'm asking club members first, before I go to regular breakers such as Zedy, as there may be somebody who wants to get rid of that big lump in the garage.

I must say that the extra strength of the SAYC diff does appeal to me and if anyone who's got one fitted would like to comment on how differently the car handles then I would appreciate the time and effort taken to give me your observations. (Alternatively, I'll search...)

    Thanks.

I'm glad mine's not the only one that's been opened and resealed. I think it's had a rebuild as it's smooth as silk back there.

Mine's been opened! Fairly permanently though...

I'm sure Wodj, Louis, et al, will be along to provide their S-AYC experiences soon enough!

Am I right in thinking that anything off an EVO 7 onwards will fit OK and will have S-AYC.
    e.g. EVO 8 MR FQ340, EVO 7 GSR

No S-AYC was only available from EVO8 onwards. EVO 7 was was the start of the Active Centre Diff.
AYC pumps from EVO 6 and below are compatible..

Concerning the RS Diff ? I none to sure which 1's will fit
But i think RS Diffs from 5 onwards will fit though there maybe some anomilies. The EVO 4 diff i think is different again.

    Cheers

What Alan didn't say then, was that the 1/2 litre of suspiciously red gear oil that came out of the diff when I started working on it, actually came out of the FILL hole.

At the time the car was jacked up at the back so, technically, it was parked on a decline
Are you saying that it is to be expected that ATF from the AYC would come out of the fill hole for the gear oil if the car was jacked up so high that an umpa lumpa working on the back box of the exhaust would need a ladder?
Or are you making some form of 'joke' (never can tell with you!)

please don't answer that, I'm doing my AYC and diff tomorrow and I don't want to know the concequences of ATF in the diff bit.

    It's bl@@dy marvellous!
Just as long as it's where it should be and not where it shouldn't be.

Not being one for letting problems persist (as long as I don't forget about them.... 2 MOTs with steering play ) I just want the thing changed so that it doesn't cr@p itself during an important journey. I haven't noticed any symptoms of the diff being problematic but then that's how it goes I suppose. One day..... kabboooom!!! or crunch, clang, bang or whatever.

steelie I've had 2 offers of AYC and 1 of SAYC. I'm weighing up the options concerning all three at the moment but yours (mileage) and your location (though I'm originally from around your area) will be out of the running. Sorry mate: too many miles and too far away. Thanks for replying.

The SAYC diff makes the car feel better, as simple as that

What will have happened with this diff is that the casing internally will have split between the sections. Because the ATF in the clutch packs is under pressure from the pump it is pushed out into the gear oil side. When Nick has undone the fill the extra oil that was forced into the diff has simply come out.

Long term the diff will selfdestruct because ATF is not the right oil for the gear section of the diff.
If I'm replying to your thread and helping you out, it is because I like you and want to help out your VR-4 ownership. No other reason

The SAYC is def worth doing if you get 3 lights when your messing around, if you never push it too much or race it, 90% of the time you won't notice, but it is a great upgrade.
Costwise the only difference is the difference between the diff's, all the other costs are the same, so it's really down to what you can afford to buy at the mo. If the difference is £100, then it's £100 well spent!

Thanks for the concise description of probable cause Brad. Maybe it'll help someone in the future if this comes up again and they do a search.

Cheers Louis. The cost difference I'm seeing at the minute is £200+ but that isn't really a consideration for me. I've got an important journey on 29th April and unless I get the diff sorted by then (pfffhhh!) it'll be on my mind. I haven't really pushed the car since owning it as it seems to have been one thing after another with the mods and general repairs, and I don't want to abuse it until I'm sure it's at it's best. However, this doesn't mean that I will NEVER give it some stick! Perhaps I'll go for the SAYC and just continually give the car a pasting and deal with breakages as and when they occur. I think I need a philosophy change....
