Karl - what is your cruising speed?
My experience has been that the VR4 is incredibly juicy at speeds above 80mph...if you keep it below 70mph it's even better. There seems to be a sweet spot around 100mph where it's not quite as disasterous. After 110mph, you might as well just drill a hole in the tank, as the usage rate is about the same.
Try and move the pedal as little as possible. Everytime you touch it, the car uses silly amounts of fuel.
Everytime you touch the brakes, you're using fuel....try and back off the throttle instead, and leave a much bigger gap between you and the car in front.
Mine seems to be intent on returning 18mpg most of the time, but will ocasionally rise to 23mpg.
i do a hell of lot of street driving nipping here ther and everywhere so short bursts rarther that 120 mph tbh mateOriginally Posted by Turbo_Steve

17mpg is about the best I've ever got with just nipping the 10 miles or so to work and back, and general running around at the weekend.
But on a run I'm pretty sure it was considerably better.
so...yes, 14-18mpg is probably about as good as you will get, just tootling round town etc.
Well...That's gone and done it!
I get 26mpg average. Most of it going to work... 50 miles, mix of motorway and A roads.
Too much is just enough.
I've just filed away my last 6 months worth of fuel receipts for the VR4.
Each refuel had been calculated with these results ;
Urban/short trips = 14.5mpg (avg.)
Motorway trips, 100 miles or more = 20mpg (avg.)
I tried driving like a granny but there was no improvement so stuck to driving 'briskly' instead !
probably the smile on your face will make up for the 14mpg. About 22mpg is reasonable. anything better is doing well
I'm still very phased by how different peoples MPG is.
Mine is pretty rubbish, but some people seem to do a lot better? Sounds like yours is about as bad as mine, Karl.
My car isn't very modified at all, Karl - it's meant to be the family car.
Have you changed your o2 sensor?
If I'm replying to your thread and helping you out, it is because I like you and want to help out your VR-4 ownership. No other reason
I get about 20mpg, or 12 litres/100km.
I'm was averaging about 18mpg going to work and back 8 miles away was picking someone up everyday but had to sit waiting for him most days , I'm not picking him up now and last week noticed the mpg was a bit better at a guess 20+ mpg

I did 400km to 54 litres the other day. But then 220km of that was done in 2 hours 30min going cross country through the hills between Waitomo and Putararu, then from Rotorua to Whakatane. According to AA Maps it was supposed to take 4 hours
I found when i took my decat pipe off the economy improved, from 15.5 l/100 km to 12.5 l/100 km. Performance is rubbish now....
Steve, you say the economy goes down the more you use the brakes. I have heard this before. Why is that?
Its a moving mass that requires energy to get it moving and keep it moving, the more braking you do the more energy it will require to get the mass back up to operating speed.Originally Posted by VR457
By looking ahead and preempting manouvres that involve brakes you should see a better mpg for your money.
Mostly applies to open road and motorway driving.
Hope that makes sense

Still here somewhere........
Because you are wasting energy built up in speed and turning it into heat on in the brake discs. If you lift off early the overun uses no fuel at all for the time you are coasting until the engine gets to about 1300 rpm so changing down the gears to keep the deceleration rpm above 1300 rpm also helps to save more fuel instead of just braking.
Keeping corner speed constant instead of slowing into corners and accelerating out without moving the throtle pedal much helps with economy too. Honestly officer i was cornering at speed to save fuel
The only VR4 legnum that has my backside rut imprinted on the drivers seat.
