depending on the age of your car it will have either 2 or 4 lambda sensors in the downpipes , these tell the engine ecu what is happening with the fuel it is using .

Check engine lights could be a multitude of faults but a failed Lambda sensor is normal .

Where abouts in the UK are as there may be a member near by with some software called evoscan which allows you to read error codes

Im in Sheffield, i recently had the front section of exhaust replaced ( bit with flexi's on ) they said they had trouble getting a sensor out, maybe something to do with that? I thought it might just be some water following washing. Its a 2001 model with a 6A13 lump

a 2001 one will have 4 sensors and if you had the flexi fixed I bet the have screwed it up when removing it , washing it should not casue any issues

once the fault is fixed the light should go off , put a request in the wanted section on here as you may get a second hand sensor cheap enough ( they ae very expensive from mitsi )

It's worth getting the car 'plugged in' and the codes read so you know which sensor is at fault, given you've a choice of four - though of the four, only one is in that section of the downpipes. Worth checking though. Problem is, the later galants output different fault codes - as far as I remember, shorting pin 1 on the diag socket doesn't make the engine light flash the code out to you.

If it IS a lambda (which as John says is looking likely given the circumstances), the car will probably drive as normal, but it'll be a bit more juicy and maybe a little hesitant every now and again. You're very unlikely to be left stranded though - Galants carry on going when they're much sicker than yours appears to be

Hi again got her plugged in on saturday and it is one of the oxygen sensors, but have a slight problem garage i used wanted £200 just for the sensor so i said i would locate one myself and they could fit it. They didn't like this idea and then called me some names, on the plus side didn't charge me for anything. only thing i got from them was it is the back left sensor thats at fault, i cant see a right or left one at the rear on any diagram. Can anyone help me with which one it is?

Well thats not nice play from the garage! Calling you names. I would tell em where to get off.

Try Camskill for the sensors, they usually cheaper than Mitsi themselves.
    Still here somewhere........

I keep meaning to install the European ASA program so I can look at UK car stuff!

I would have thought a generic O2 sensor can be used - there are some links knocking around somewher. Kieran might have a better insight as to exactly where it is.

I'm sure there's one post cat. They always had a pre & post cat sensor (with the exception possibly of the really early ones), and then they got sensors in both manifolds too.

Can see one on each manifold and one on front section of the exhaust, manifolds are described as left n right even though they are transversly set the left being at the rear so i'm presuming this is the one thats gone.
