Sounds like an expensive solution cass. A new set of tappets isn't cheap but good oil changing this often....

My v6 was the same, as soon as it starts rattling then it was service time, it normally lasted about 6k miles between services so only 3 k early

sorry couldnt resist. seriously tho always ran my leggie on valvoline 0-40 and changed it every 3000 miles and my tappets were quite quiet, the v6 24 prior to that were always noisy and an oil change only kept them quieter for a couple of hundred miles . seems to be a mitsubishi failing, think the tolerances are a bit tight. stan

Switch tappets you all and stop changing oil every hundred miles. 4x changing (good) oil will buy you a set of uprated tappets. Saves on oil and stops the tappets indefenitely.

Tappets must have a finite life.

A few years ago I was told it was ~ 100,000 miles/10 years.

Also, long drainage intervals with inferior oil is likely to short their life expectancy.

The V6 which I bought seems free of tappet rattle. But the previous owner (from new) had it serviced every 12 months/9,000 miles at Mitsi dealers.

hiya ... got tappin in every galant i owned (2.0, 2.5 v6 sport, legnum and vr4) ... the best thing is to STOP listening to bloody idiots from places like Halsford - they recomend MINERAL oil for my vr4 (112k on clock) !! MINERAL oil for turbocharged engine ??!! ... before changing any tappers - just change the oil for some proper one - made for turbocharged engines - not Castrol Magnatec - coz u can stick that one to ur wifes Corsa )) flush the engine, new oil, new filter ... drive max 4-5k miles then do it again - 100% noise will go away for next 4-5k miles - then when it starts tapping again - simple ANOTHER oil change ... lets dont make easy things look tough - coz they aint !! ))

i had a noisy lifter on mine for around 7 months, tried flushing it twice and changed the oil to a expensive grade each time it did get quieter but always came back, but then out of sheer devilment i bought some molyslip added it to the engine oil thrashed it for 2 miles ...and guess what quiet as a mouse and 2 months later still no tapping so for me molyslip worked i will be adding it every time i change the oil. maybe its worth a go guys..??

@Chris300zx: how many miles have you driven those 2 months? I'm convinced you'll get the tapping back soon.

@viniu88: as said before, you can flush again and again, plus change your oil every few thousand miles and spend a load of money on oil. It's your choise. We drive around 20000km with the legnum each year and that would cost a lot on oil changes! Just switch the tappets and be over with it!
