I must seem really negative - I thought I was being quite balanced!

Nick - BMW330d tourer? Saab TD estates? Audi A4 2.5 TDI Estate?

Not a one of them will match the VR4 from a standing start, I agree. But how often, really, do you do off-the-line launches?

Any of the above diesels with a remap is comparable to an auto VR4 running a boost controller

And the ATR is a truly brilliant car. It's just got an annoying boot and is a touch slow when four up

You bought another VR4? I was quite impressed with the MPG on a run the other night. £60 ish to do 240 miles & driving fairly hard for half of it

That's exactly the problem right there - it wasn't too thirsty on the hard driving, but it was utterly useless at being frugal on cruise.

I didn't even think it was too bad cruising but I agree that they ain't the best, in fact, far from it. I use mine mostly round town & it is starting to feel that I am spending half of my life at the pump & with 99 ron fuel round here at betweeen 125 & 130 per litre, it is starting to get a bit silly.

Steve is just whinging because his car gets crap fuel consumption. Some of us get considerably better fuel economy
If I'm replying to your thread and helping you out, it is because I like you and want to help out your VR-4 ownership. No other reason

see thats the problem i aint getting good fuel economy 240 miles to a tank of 99 ron is getting expensive when i do nearly 500 miles a week so i assume an atr aint a bad car as long as you dont want to move house with the size of the boot.?

I can see where both Steve & Chris are coming from.

I'm in the lucky position where I have a works van & fuel for that is paid for & only drive the Leggy at weekends & short trips during the week droping the kids of at clubs that they go to.

The wife drive's it during the week for school runs & shopping trips so fuel costs are'nt to bad for me.

If I was covering 500 plus miles a week going back & forth to work I think I would be looking for a cheap run around or selling up.

Going to Japfest this weekend is going to be over 1000 mile round trip & our biggest out lay on the trip will be fuel.
The mighty Leedsnum has gone but the Airtrek mods will soon fill this space

I achieved 395 miles from a tank, on 4 100 mile round trips to work and back. This is from the same car that aldo achieved 4.5mpg on track and as low as 9mpg average on blatting round town and an average of 170 miles per tank around town..
I'm not saying it's easy! But 300+ should be easyish on a tank on long runs

    At what speed, Wodj?
If it's less than 80mph, then the diesel still wins.

Still don't think I agree on the whole performance thing..... I also think that the german offerings below are significantly smaller than the 8G when looking at boot space but I can't find official figures for the Leggies boot capacity.

    power 204 bhp
    torque 243 lbs/ft
    0-60 7.8
    35.8 mpg combined
    4478 long
    1739 wide
    1409 high
    435 litre boot
1345 litre capacity rear seats folded

    Saab 9-5 3.0 V6 TiD Manual (Can't see auto?)
    power 176 bhp
    torque --- lbs/ft

    37.2 mpg combined
    4828 long
    1792 wide
    1480 high
    416 litre boot
1490 litre capacity rear seats folded

Audi A4 2.5 TDi SE Auto
    power 150 bhp
    torque --- lbs/ft
    0-60 10.2
    36.2 mpg combined

car pulled out and came past ...brand new merc 6 litre sl sports car..the big expensive jobbies...
i had a smile on my face that is still there...
my 14 year old car kept back an 70-80 grand merc sports car..
