you were doing 140mph the light was a police car...you pulled onto the hard shoulder and were bent over by a police officer and had your car impounded!

I'm not sure there's really enough info to even make a wild guess...what kind of light and was it in front or behind?

    and the answer is...

So this is what happened :-(

the light i saw was one of my AYC lights coming on, i immediately thought "that's not right" so started to slow down and left the outside lane, at that point a rear tyre blew out and I almost lost control, i think the car and my luck is the only reason i was able to safely cross 2.5 lanes regain control and pull over on hard shoulder.

    and heres the tyre....

    Holy ****!

Glad you're safe dude, that's what counts Shame about the tyre but they're replaceable.

I've noticed occasionally one of my AYC lights has come on whilst driving straight, turns out I just needed to top the air up in the tyre

Holy crap! That is some catastrophic blowout. Apologies about making a joke as you must be well shaken after that experience.

Any indication as to why it blew? It looks like that inside edge has been rubbing on something for a while causing it to soften up. Wow. Glad you are ok though and that you were able to pull over safely.

Its a high loading tyre too at 91W, seems weird it blew its sidewall out! Whats the wear across the face of the tyre like? Its as is the inner wall was rubbing against something?

A blow out at speed is a scary scenario. I had one blow on my GTO within an hour of me picking it up. Turns out they were mud and snow tyres on it.

    You have been very lucky!
    Still here somewhere........

I think the font looks like a Michelin, but we'll find out fairly soon I guess.

It looks like it had a reasonable amount of tread left on it. Are the other tyres on the car the same type? What pressure did you keep it inflated to?

What date code is the tyre? Check here if you don't know how to tell http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
If I'm replying to your thread and helping you out, it is because I like you and want to help out your VR-4 ownership. No other reason

I t does look as though there is advanced wear on the inside. Is the car lowered? That would effect the camber angle and cause wear to the inside edge of all tyres.

I have just noted excessive wear on mine from 7mm on the outside to 1mm on the inside.
    Cheers,
    Barney

car isnt lowered, i knew the tyres were getting clsoe to needing changing, but not this close (turns out needed 4 new tyres, so not too happy with my cheapo mot place few weeks ago, guess thats why they were cheap)

I dont beleive in god but this is the closest ive been to beleiving there is someone wathcign over me, the guys who came out (i was a bit shaken ,up, initially i was gonna get towed to nearest garage then leave car there, they said the only reason the car didnt flip is that the tyre didnt come off the rim, they sad if it had then the rim most likely would have dug in to the flow casign the car to turn and flip, and at 70ish my chances of walking away fomr it would have been very debatable, they dunno how the tyre stayed on the rim considering the pretty catastrophic faileure of the internal sidewall, they said i was "lucky" now i do believe i have an element of luck in my life, but this has probably used up my allocaito nfor the year!

they were continentals, i was very lucky, if had gone during one of my high speed dundee to bristol runs god knows what may have happened

may also be partly my fault, i was moving back to bristol from dundee so have been moving stuff back, i didnt think id overloaded my car but perhaps i had and put undue pressure on the tyres.

typical though 4 new tyres when im 6 months into no job is worst timing ever, £280 was pretym uch exactly what i had left in my accoutnt so gonna be very tough now.......might even have to SELL the car :-( NOOOOO , any guestimates what a 1996 prefacelift glant vr4 auto with Gowf fitted intercooler and 12 months mot...oh and 4 new tyres might be worth in todays climate? (97k miles but lots of that was done in K/m so probably closer to 80k miles) always run on V-power or bp ultimate and serviced last year +cambelt change by our very own gowf (who seemed to thik the car looked ok)
