    galant diesel conversion

    hello all,

its been a while since ive been on. my 2.4gdi is going well but the mileage i do every year is starting to take its toll on the old girl. rather than chuck it away i thought about planning a more economical solution for it.

i have 1 option available which is a v6 auto. all i need then is lpg but is it really going to make that much of a difference to fuel costs?

or the rather drastic one which is diesel.... sounds wrong really but as most people out there think the poor old GDI is a diesel then i may as well.

so question is how to go about it? has it been done?

ive researched all the fwd options which isnt many to be honest.

ive also thought about pajeros and shogun donors. they are after all mega cheap?

would it be possible to just rotate these engines so i can bolt them down or is it a no go.. someones claimed that they can on a run get upwards of 50mpg with there 2.4 diesel auto?

oh and i forgot to mention mine is a tripy tronic.

i do on average 500 miles a week going to work.

ive got another car for weekends that i routinely drive mega hard and when im a bit skint i drive her 1.9tdi which is great but it would take a while to get to work as its an older diesel.

if the above doesnt sound feasable then i guess when the galant throws in towel thats my love affair over with the galants

ive looked into vr4s with lpg but that doesnt make all that much sense... does it?

shame i couldnt lpg the gdi.

    any suggestions welcome

What sort of mpg do you get from your GDI at the moment?

you will not get anywhere near 50mpg from a pajero engine even if you do manage to fit the engine in the first place.
for pure economy get a diesel skoda,vw etc
my 2,8 pajero will do 500-550 miles to the tank and their cheap to buy as you know

doesnt look as good as a galant tho ill stick to my old 405 pug diesels when the galant kicks the bucket

    ill do some more investimagations...

im no stranger to conversions.. ive converted a 405 estate into an mi16 and several diesel swaps.

just thougght with the 20% hike in vat coming it may make my journeys a bit more expensive

My overall average for my GDI (152,000 miles on the clock when I sold it) was ~ 33.00 m.p.g.

Dual carriageway & motorway was about 40 m.p.g. ( but that was usually fully loaded and air-con on). Best was ~ 43.00 m.p.g. Nearer 50.00 might have been possible using cruise control (which I hate), others seem to disagree.

So seems similar to your figures?

Surely the issue with the pajero engine is the fact that it's linked to a big, unaerodynamic bodyshell that isn't that light, and a very lossy transmission system?

Carisma 1.9 diesel lump should fit easily enough (well easier than a pajero lump) but not very powerful + would have to be manual + they average 54 mpg in a carisma
