Guide: Remove and repair the clock.

Since I bought my Galant a few weeks back the clock has been going on and off, so it HAD to be sorted out.

Heres a quick guide for others that come across this issue.


Firstly we need to remove the clock from the dashboard. Its connected to the dash by 4 spring steel clips. You will see one of mine has snapped off.

Pull gently from the sides and once it starts to move lift it a little from the front. Keep repeating this until it comes out. There also 2 plastic lugs at the so if your careful you wont snap them off.

Heres the hole left once its been removed.

Next undo the screws pictured below.

Next all you have to do is unhook the locking tabs until you have 3 pieces like below.

Now its time to remove circuitboard, lcd and button panel. This all comes out as a single unit. The only thing holding it in is the 2 plastic hooks.

The clock in the galant is old school electronics, so resoldering anything should be easy. In mine it was the solder joints on the plug connector that had cracked. Looking at the board there shouldn't really be any other weak areas, but if you resolder the points shown below and it doen't fix it redo them all.

Solder used is leaded so if you want to dab over them all with lead free solder this isn't a problem. If you have flux (not the plumbing kind) it might worth freshening up any joints that dont look that good.

In theory that should be it. Test it in the car before reassembly and you should be good to go.

when reassembling it easier to put the buttons onto the PCB like below.

It never has worked since I have had it & i'm convinced the previous owner has glued it in along the back edge. Any suggestions anyone, short of snapping it off & then pulling the clips out with pliers?

PS, I have a spare if I do resort to using a chainsaw or similar

If it all goes horribly wrong there must plenty out there from cars being stripped for parts. I reckon the dash would survive the clock being pulled out.

I'm sure you can access it from underneath ? Take the centre console out and the top vents if need be. Then u should be able to give the clips a squeeze from below and push them thru ..

Possibly, I did have the vents etc out when I fitted my new head unit but couldn't feel anythink, but did do it in the dark that probably didn't help

Thanks very much for this info.
I've got a Galant GLS Estate, and the clock has never worked properly in the 3 years I have had it.....it would randomly pick a time and display it.
I gave up trying to remove the clock before for fear of damage, figuring it was bolted in from beneath.
Thanks to the guide above, the clock is now working perfectly.
It was the joints from the loom connector.

I removed my clock today as it kept loosing the time. It didnt go well! >_< Managed to snap most of the plastic clips and have spent the evening superglueing it all back together! haha! I just hope after all the effort it works properly now! XP Regardless of me screwing mine up. Very helpful guide, nice clear pictures and easy to follow. Good work! =D
