Petrol and Running Rich

I've read somewhere about my car smelling rich and using a lot of petrol.

My car is smelling rich and not sure if it is using a lot of petrol but i average 100 miles to £30 (is that normal)

I have read somewhere that you can check if your car is running rich but i cant remember where i saw it, any ideas?

That sounds (or rather smells!) completely normal.
