    limp home mode

another thread on 3rd gear + flashing 'n'
On my way to work this morning and as engine was just getting to temp gearbox went into 3rd gear, flashing 'n' (twice per sec). As i was near my mums i carried on for a further 3/4 mile to park up there but then lost all drive.
I tried switching off and restarting but the car wouldnt move.
I've had a quick browse through and i am hoping its an oil level issue, but having lost all drive im wondering if it is? I dont know weather to wait till tonight and fill it up or just arrange for it to be taken to a garage now

Unfortunately, not easily around this evening.

When you pull the ATF dipstick out, is there any fluid on it, and what colour is it? I will admit though, it does sound more serious than an ATF issue.

Make sure they know that it must be flatbedded (especially as the gearbox is not working, but may be repairable).

ive found a broken jubilee clip and a loose hose, and looks like i dumped all my oil out of the gearbox,

Will it live if i just refill or will it be dead after running empty?

You might be lucky. The fill hole is the dipstick tube - I suggest the use of a funnel!

I got a 0.5L suction gun which should help

Well, the AA sent a van (it is up to 2 hours for a flatbed) and the bloke couldnt help me fix the hose - in case something else went wrong, then he could be held responsible - WTF! I only want a jubilee clip.

I'll have to go back tomorrow and top it all up - Ive got 5L of ATF which will hopefully fill it, is there anywhere to bleed the A/T? Ive had a quick search but couldnt find anything only the flush article warning not to run dry

You'll need more than 5L. You flush it as it says in the article.
The mighty Leedsnum has gone but the Airtrek mods will soon fill this space

After my initial panic, I reconnecnected the pipes, put on a new clip and added 4.5L of ATF (Thanks Chris) I filled the gearbox up and started the car,
looks like I didnt loose as much as I feared,

Everything feels fine, smooth changes tip works and I rechecked levels once everything warmed up.

Glad it was a simple fix - and I hope Ive done no damage
