why can't i upload .doc file (word docs)

I can upload .jpg but the uploader does not recognise the the .doc file extension. it uploads the file and put a big question mark on it with the file name in place but no file extension.

Cant help on that, but what about printing the document as a PDF and uploading? - Ive used CutePDF as a printer for a couple of years and think its quite good
