Disable backup when upgrading iphone

I'm getting a lille frustrated , i'm trying to update software of iphone to v4.2.1... but i dont have the space on my laptop to make the full backup of the phone to perform the upgrade...

I dont want to install itunes on another machine, nor do i want to jailbreak it.

Does anyone have any tips, ive out googled myself today, its beat me

Is it not possible to put your itunes on a good size usb momory stick and have that plugged in while you update?

Nope, adding extra storage isn't an option - there has to be Some way.

I found articles which gave commands you enter in cmd, but they were for older os version thus that file it was referring to wasn't there.

Apple drive me nuts sometimes. Surely if I want to take the risk to upgrade without backing up I can! Meh

Edit - I'm on iTunes 10.0.1.22, and using an iphone 4 but its worked fine for me when using a 3gs/3g etc

Barry, when I used to have my old 3G, I used Itunes on my 4GB netbook, but had Itunes setup to put all its files onto an external USB drive. So the Itunes program was installed on the C drive, but the folder it stored all its data was on the external hdd. I had a good 5GB of music on the phone so it must have worked for me. It was so long ago now that I cant mremember how I did it.

Can you clear some space on the laptop mate by running Disk cleanup, CCleaner etc ? Any programs you can delete that you no longer use ?

This any good :

1.Quit iTunes.
2.Press Win+R (opens the Windows Run dialog)
3.Type or copy the following command:
“%CommonProgramFiles%\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\defaults.exe” write com.apple.iTunes AutomaticDeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true
4.Open iTunes.
5.Connect the iPhone.
6.Make Sync without backing up.
