hot start.....weird idle

ok the car has done this since i got it....the previous owner made me aware of it.

sometimes.....and i stress sometimes, after a run doesnt matter if it was 5 miles or 50 miles.

if i turn it off and return about 5-10mins later and start the car up the idle is very very erratic.

it hunts up and down the rev range between trying to stall and 900rpm it drops so low the ignition lights sometimes flicker.

now if i return to the car 20-30mins later never does it .....weird

the car does not struggle to start fires over on the button....but the idle is erratic and hunting alot. it will doo it 1 in 10 times

Mine has a tendency to do the same in the summer, I find applying a little gas for 10 seconds or so evens out the rough idle........ hasnt done this for a long time, I have changed spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, engine oil etc ... not sure if they would have any effect though.........

it will be your idle air control valve take it off clean with carb cleaner then should be o.k

stepper motor may need a good claen or replacing mine done this and a good clean done the trick

Sounds the same as mine mate, Ive not been bothered as it only happens on rare occasions. Mine sometimes stalls the first time then when I start it again the same erratic idle happens but if I drive in first gear until 4000rpm, for 100yds or so, before changing up it is fine next time i stop in traffic.

Does yours do this? I have no strange noises etc when this happens other than the revs of course.

Check the crank case breather pipe hasn't come off or split as this affected my idle quite badly.

I have always put this down to heat-soak.

When you leave it sat for 5-10 minutes, it gets very, very warm, and it takes a few seconds of pulling through nice cold, fresh air before it settles.

A couple of seconds on the throttle usually sorts it out.

It's worse if you've messed about with the standard intake (ie cone filter)

my GDi did that. my mechanic wanted to try resetting the idle controller but didnt have the software to do it
