    Legnum Tiptronic Gearbox

    Hi,

My 2000 VR4 Tiptronic gearbox is flaring between gearshifts and needs repaired or replaced. I am wondering if anyone has one for sale, or knows where to find one either in good condition or reconditioned that could be swapped straight in thus avoiding the costly process of stripping and re-parting my existing transmission.

    Thanks in anticipation.

I have one in very good condition sitting in my garage. Came out of a car that was written off due to driver error. There was NO mechanical problems in this car whatsoever, and I looked after it very well.

I'd be after $500 for it.

Just out of interest, who has determined that your gearbox is fubared?

It sounds as if degraded or the wrong type of ATF could be the culprit. If Dexron-III has been used, then that can cause problems.

A full flush and change with Amsoil ATF would be highly recommended at this stage, as you may find that it solves the problems after a few hundred kms.

If you do change the gearbox, ensure that you get the matching A/T ECU to go with it, otherwise there could be possible problems with a replacement working correctly if there is an ECU mismatch.

    Hi Scott,

Thanks for your response. If I may inquire, how many kms does your box have on it? I am considering trying a transmission flush before removing the box in mine to see if this works, but failing that, I could well be interested in your gearbox. I am wondering if the box out of a '96 vehicle would be compatible with mine though given it is a facelift type-S with AYC. Do you know?

    Cheers,

    Colin

    Thanks for your reply Nev,

It was driven by a transmission specialist who recommended it be pulled out for checking. He suspected the rings (can't quite remember which ones) were worn allowing fluid to leak past thus reducing the ATF pressure. He said these boxes were known for it. Your idea of a flush sounds interesting though. I did not think to try this. Certainly a cheaper option!

If it was necessary to swap it, is there are sure way of telling that the transmission ECU matches?

    Cheers,

    Colin

The car it came out of had done about 101,000km when it was crashed, so the transmission would have been the same. I'm not 100% sure on what would be needed (if anything) to mate it up to a facelift, but I'm pretty sure the knowledge is on here or ozvr4.

As Nev has said, try the flush first. I've had good results doing flushes with these boxes.

Anyone got a good resource for how to do a flush? I am keen to give it a shot if it is not to complicated.

Yup in the members section. $30 membership is cheaper then $400 to get it done at the dealers!

    Hi Scott,

I decided now to try to replace the transmission. I wonder if you still have your box available?

    Regards,
    Colin

Being a full member of this club is essential if you own one of these cars. The knowledge base here is unrivaled and far exceeds what your local dealer / mechanic thinks or claim they know. I would even go as far as saying that with a very few exceptions they just havent got a clue. The free advice you have received here is simple and clear, join the club, act big and cough up the annual fee; but no, looks like you will do $1000 instead. Smart not.
Chances are Amsoil would fix the problem, wont tell you how , wont tell you why or certainly how to do it properly. Done this all before as have others and its all in the members section. The shortsightedness of some beggers belief on occasions.
If you have a problem with getting Amsoil just contact me on 07949 944523 email don@performanceoilsltd.co.uk or web at http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/
