    TRE manual gearbox upgrades.

These guys have been spoken about before on the forums, as they offer a decent final drive ratio as an option when refurbing a manual gearbox.

You can get refurbs from under US $2000 including the 3.73 final drive option - this includes shot peening, new bearings, improved oil ways, ect ect.

I have one issue though, they don't seem to answer emails! If anyone knows a gearbox specialist that could potentially offer me a similar service at a similar cost, I'd be interested.

More info on the TRE stuff here:

Nick there is a guy on MLR who seems to know his onions (clivew) who does rebuilds , from what I have seen on there in the past he is damn good

infact IIRC he was the guy who made his own AYC diff housing

other than that may be worth posting on MLR or asking ARNSIDE

I know that talk of 3.73 FD on the VR4 has come up a few times in the past but I seem to recall a table showing the thoeretical difference in revs/mph and top speeds in each gear... or did I imagine this? (Yes I did try searching, maybe not hard enough )

Has any VR4 owner tried a 3.73 yet? How much do you think it would affect overall performance? I can imagine there will be an increase in stress on driveline but does anyone have any thoughts how significant this would be at std boost and upped boost (~1 bar)?

    Cheers

He is very good, specialises in Ford stuff, I'm thinking about going to him regarding the golf. Rebuilding an evo box isn't all that difficult though.

No extra stress should be added to the drive train by the change but the loading on the engine would be higher , but not enough to effect the longevity of it

Remember that the auto uses a 3.3 final drive

Performance would depend on your torque curve and weather the gear changes would drop the revs to high or low on the curve and you end up with black holes as the turbo is off boost
Got a table at home so will throw the numbers at it and produce a graph.

Does the auto not also have different ratio's? You will be applying the same quantity of torque for longer periods of time at the gearbox so the stress will be slightly increased. However, the fatigue limit is 425lbft which you will not be hitting so dont worry. Put simply, your car will be slower in acceleration but will give you better economy and a much higher top speed.
To be honest if you wanted to do it properly you would have a custom gear kit with that final drive to allow for better acceleration whilst retaining 5th. This however will be costly.

yup very handy to play around with the ratios and tyres to see what kind of outcome it has. 3.73 doesn't look too bad

Apart from TRE/teamRip has anyone come across any other manufacturers who provide gearsets for the evo?

    Cheers

I'm still on to this. I have found a gear specialist near me who are currently making 100 close ratio boxes for a rally car supplier. They seem to think making a final drive gearset for our box should be achievable, so I am taking my box to them on Wednesday for a look-see.

    Fingers crossed!

I have taken ratio info from this thread and used the link above to generate this info:

    ratios.jpg

I am going to take all this with me on wednesday and work out if it is possible.

If anyone has any input at this stage, please shout now!

Indeed, then look at how much fuel you'd save and how many months it would take to recoupe the cost..

I'm not sure there would be a significant fuel saving, but at least the revs would be lower, so the sound would be reduced....

Would be good to get revs down and just coast along at 2.2 - 2.5k. I am sure there'll be a calculation out there indicating percentage of fuel usage at reduced revs..

Noise levels in cabin, for all with aftermarket/custom exhausts, could probably be a relief too

The evo folk who have installed TRE or HKS sets don't tend to think about going lower than 3.73 as many think it will hurt performance too much. I'd hope that the VR would have enough torque to pull from low down still? On the US forums, the few of the evo owners who have gone for the 3.73 sets down from 4.5(ish) do comment about improved consumption and db levels on the motorway tho so it could be significant enough.

Nick, I am guessing that you have had the guts of a manual box out on a couple of occassions? Without over simplifying the job, do you think that it would be fairly straight forward to change FDrive and would it be worth refreshing the other user serviceable parts such as bearings, gaskets, shims and other gubbins etc? Do you know of any overhaul kits?

I'm interested in that too, my gbox need input shaft bearing to be change asap so it could be done together with ratio changing.

So far I find this post http://www.lancerregister.com/showthread.php?t=17637
and was thinking about give them a call http://www.nr-autosport.com/index.htm
and ask about rebuild my gbox

If I decide to DIY here looks like they got decent prices http://mitsubishi.epc-data.com/galan...8,18249,18252/
but I never use them b4 and don't know how reliable they are.
