1996 vr4 auto/triptrnic gearbox wont change from 2nd to 3rd

hi all imy partner was driving the car being a tool in triptronic mode and managed to slap it up into neutral, we lost 3rd 4th and 5th but it will still drive 1st and 2nd and reverse. dont have a clue as to what has happened but sounds like its not garbing after 2nd. any help would be very much appreciated thankyou

you need and ew gearbox mate i have 2 cars here which do the same thing.

This is unusual. You should be able to whack it into N without any ill effects. You might have issues if you have accidentally put it into reverse, or bashed it back into D while under heavy load.

Cheap try but disconnect the battery for 20 minutes or so to reset the ecu? Worth a try but if you have any key codes for stereo etc make sure you have them to hand before you do it!

wwe tried disconnecting the battery straight away as we thought it my reboot the coputer or what ever but it didnt work pretty sure i need a new gearbox but dont really know where to start. im in western australia and have had 2 quotes for 2nd hand gear box both around $1600 just for the gearbox. so if any of u may know somebody that would be very useful. thankyou
