    2.0 galant estate classic manual

    hello,
    im new to the forum and looking for a bit of advice on the above car.A 52 plate car has come into work as a part ex and its cheap.lol.the car has done 107k and had the cam belt changed at 101k in jan,it also had a new sump and service.the question and advice i need the answer to is this: the car makes a horrible noise when the clutch is let out and the car is moving,almost grinding.the clutch is still very low and i was thinking it will be the release/thrust/throwout bearing would my thinking be right?if so what engnie code is it and also what clutch part number do i need,as i have been trying to find the correct part on google ebay the lot but there seems to be 2 different size plates 225mm and 215mm.
    the car is £500 and just needs a very good buff and it will be a nice motor,is it worth doing the clutch?is it possible to do a clutch change yourself?

    Someone that knows more about manuals should be along soon but I think you'll have to be patient cause the forum is very quite today with the good weather down south & a few off to the ring.

    cheers for the welcome.yea ok no worries.ive got till monday afternoon anyway so no massive rush.the clutch kit part is te main thing as there is so many.

    sounds more like gearbox fault, release bearing is normally noisey when clutch is pressed

    what sort of fault?i thought it was the other way round.the gears all seem smooth and goes in fine.how much is a new box for one?

    i will most probably have it and sort it out but i cant find the right part number to get the right clutch.my post isnt showing up on my comp,can you see the pic?

    o right i was trying to put a pic up from photobucket.lol.im pretty sure its a ea2a engine but when i look for a clutch i get a 215mm and a 225mm.

    when youre foot is off the clutch there is no pressure on the relsease bearing so shouldnt really be spinning but the gear box is spinning. When you press the clutch the release bearing is spinning so if was faulty would make noise and gearbox would stop spinning. so if its noisey when youre off the clutch this would inicate gearbox fault (bearing gone maybe) but if its noisey when youre on the clutch this would indicate release bearing fault.

    Yep, w is estate and a is saloon. It is definitely a w!

    The other thing that FWD manual gearboxes sometimes suffer with is input shaft bearing failure. That could make the repair more expensive than just a clutch. It does look like a noce car for £500 though!

    what would the best option be then,second hand box or to get the input shaft?how much are we talking for te input bearing?

    i have been told that its the box,i have emailed someone on ebay and a box is £130 delivered which has covered 85k.

    well i went ahead and bought the galant for £500,drove it home today and bloody hell its a smooth drive.loads of speed bumps round my end and it went over them better than my lexus is200 use to.but the car wouldnt stay in 4th gear,kept popping out.i think i made a mistake the other day by pressing the clutch slave cylinder part together and that made the pedal go all soft.
