    torque converter oil seal

any one changed the torque converter oil seal, been on a run today and its leaking bad enough, not loads but a bit of a puddle, looks like its coming from the join between the engine and gear box, so i guess its torque converter seal. is it a hard job

If you willing to DIY is only few quid for a seal and a lot of labour to get gbox out, if you want this done by the garage then it could be expensive as clutch job.

Bummer. Just for your info, I charge £350 to change the T/C seal. That includes 10 litres of Amsoil, a genuine seal, Amsoil SVG for the transfer box and a top up of coolant. (You don't strictly need to remove the rad, but I like to have a bit more space to work.) Labour equates to approx £200.

Hope that info is useful! I'm certainly not expecting you to bring it to me - it would cost a significant amount in fuel just to get here!!

Just be careful running it with a known leak. They can just let go and drop everything all over the road very quickly!

    | had the TC seal go on me on the way home from Japfest 2009. Get it fixed asap cause when it go's it go's. No warning except a lot of smoke after the atf hitting the downpipes.
The mighty Leedsnum has gone but the Airtrek mods will soon fill this space

I allow 10-12 hours working by myself. It can be quicker, but you only need a couple of awkward bolts and it gets much worse! The first time I did a gearbox change there were several of us and it took longer than that....

Yep, as John said, there is a how to written by a member in reasonable detail.

    Basically, remove:
    downpipes
    crossbeam holding front roll stop
    driveshafts (drain gearbox first)
    propshaft (drain transfer box first)
    radiator for improved access
    starter motor
    battery & tray
air filter & maf & intake pipework to front turbo
    strut brace
    transfer box
torque converter to flywheel bolts through access hatch by starter motor
all wiring to gearbox plugs (don't forget the speedo)
    gear selector cable
atf pipes at side of gearbox
    rear roll stop
bellhousing bolts (support engine & gearbox first)
    gearbox mount

    Change £15 seal.

    Refit all of above!

I have replaced a auto box in my car and the oil abput £60 for 5L and you need about 10-12L and filter £5-£10 and seal £15. So you are talking over £150 on parts alone so nick's price of £350 all in is very good.
If was not such a "i'll have a go at that, how hard can it be" well 3 days hard, i would have got nick to do mine.

    Bye for Now!

cheers for the good info, ill have to have a think on this, think its worth paying the money to get it done rather than have the hasstle, do you take the transfer box off the gearbox or take it all out together?

Transfer box has to come off the gearbox before the gear box comes out.
