    TPS measurement.

    Hi All,

Just cleaned up my throttle body and am setting up the TPS having received an error code.

Now according to the service manual, there should be continuity between pins 3 and 4 for cars without traction control when the throttle body is fully closed. Mine appears to be open circuit, so wondered if anyone who wouldnt mind, with a multimeter and 5 mins to spare, could please just pop the connector off their tps and please test continuity between pins 3 & 4 which are the uppermost two pins when looking at the connectors. The pins are basically for earth and idle position switch.

    cheers

    Derek

Hi. The idle switch and earth are the lower bottom pins- not the uppermost pins. Twist the tps until you get the following.

At idle, idle switch to earth pins should be close to 0 ohms. When the throttle plate is open about 1mm, you should read open circuit. The idle switch must turn off when the throttle plate has opened about 2%(or around 100mv) from whatever the idle % reading is otherwise you may set an error code. You can measure the voltage by backprobing the sensor or alternatively use evoscan to read the tps %. Hope i have helped and not confused you!

    Hi MArk,

Cheers for your post and yes with the meter a week or so ago and I worked out that it was the lower two pins 3 & 4. The service manual showed the groove on the connector on the different side to actual unit in the engine bay. (or maybe the diagram they used was for an auto or a system with TCL and/or TCL). So, as you explained, the device seems to be working.

I am consistently getting TPS open code 41 from the AYC diagnostics which is quite a common fault reported in the past ....do you know what condition triggers that error? I set up the TPS as per the instructions using the feeler gauges but cannot seem to irradicate this fault code.

evoscan show the throttle position sensor at 12.504% when at idle... out of interest, what are other people seeing at idle?

That sounds about right, D. I usually see numbers of around 12% when off the throttle.

Thats good.. so mine is at about the right place after cleaning. Just need to clarify what TPS open, as reported by the AYC ecu, is all about...

I had my TPS off for changing the throttle shaft seals today.

I thought I'd put it back in the same position, but the idle seems to be hunting up and down a bit from my set idle of about 650 RPM.

Also, when I start the car the revs seem to skyrocket for a moment even when warm, before settling.

I connected up EvoScan, I can see the throttle value changing by itself there too.

I found the section in the Japanese & USDM manuals, I don't have TCL so it looks like I do this:

    - Put a 0.65mm feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and the throttle lever
    - Unplug & loosen the TPS
    - Put a multimeter on the lower 2 pins on the TPS
    - Turn TPS until I get an open circuit
    - Tighten up TPS and plug back in

If idle is still hunting then disconnect the battery for a short while to reset things.

    Does this sound correct?

Also, could I use EvoScan to check this instead.. is it the "Idle Position Switch" that I should be looking at?

    That sounds about right

I used evoscan and like you say, checked the idle position switch change state. I did not encounter the hunting at idle when I reconnected though, the car idled up at 1500 then dropped back down and settled.

    Good luck!

All done now. I had to use a multimeter after all, EvoScan's "Idle Position Switch" setting didn't seem to work.

Ahh I think I found similar issue but isn't the IPS listed under both EFI and AYC (IIRC - not sure) I had to check it using the AYC I think.. thats all irrelevant now tho I guess. Did you encounter and idle issues? Has the fault code gone?

Idle is all good now, nice and stable. I did disconnect the battery for a minute too, but I think the main culprit was the Idle Switch. I didn't have any fault codes, just the hunting. Bit tricky getting a feeler gauge in though, I made sure to tie a piece of string to it in case I dropped it.

I'm still interested to see if EvoScan will show the info, so I'll have another look tomorrow with the AYC ECU instead, you are correct that there is the TPS and Idle Pos Switch under that too.

When adjusted correctly for the Idle Switch and the feeler gauge removed my TPS now reads 14%.. so a little different to what others are saying with their 12.5%. My TPS can only just get to 12% if I rotate it fully to the stop.
