    PCV Valve

Yuk.. How much crap was in there  When I first took it out, I could hardly blow through it. I shook it and heard nothing moving inside!
I didn't have and Carb/Brake cleaner, so use some white spirit. I tipped some into the valve and them blocked both ends with finger and thumb and shook it vigorously for 15-20 seconds, then let the contents out :sly: it was rather gunky to say the least. I repeated this process 6-7 times until the white spirit game out clear. Now shaking the PCV I could now here the valve moving backwards and forwards inside. Also now blowing through it in the outward direction, I could blow through it clearly with no restriction. Blowing through it the other way the valve blocked as it should.
Now I don't know if this will have any positive affects on the car. But I know it can have a large affect on Fuel Consumption
    Let's hope
If not, it cost a few pennys of white spirit and 5-10mins of time. So no hardship.

    Cheers

Mine was blocked up last time I took it out. So I did exactly the same thing to clean it.
Not sure it made much of a noticable difference.but it works now and the oil vapour from the rocker covers gets pulled through and burnt in the engine.

Something else I did notice was the rubber pipes connenting the 2 rocker covers and the one going back to the inlet pipework were gunged up as well. They were oily and all crusty on the insides.
I ran a flat bladed screw driver through them, the blade of the screw driver was the same width as the inside of the pipe and I rotated the screw driver as it went through and the amount of lunge was scary.

What and where is this valve? Might be worth just checking to see if needs cleaning.

It is next to IFS (Ignition Fail Sensor) on the back of the front rocker cover. It is black and just pulls out backwards towards the plenum chamber to get it out.
It has a short pipe coming from it at right angles and it goes to the inlet manifold.
The direction of air flow should be towards the inlet manifold, one way valve.
It is under the engine cover.

Cleaned the PCV today on the VR2. Was a bit dirty, but I wonder: should the airflow be strictly being able to go 1 way? If I blow from the 'exit' side a tiny bit of air escapes. Bad?

it is not meat to do that but a little leak will probably not be a problem
when the plenum is pressurised it will start to mildly pressurise the rocker cover and crank case, but there is a open pipe that goes from the rear rocker to the unpressurise side of the turbo inlet so the air will escape through that root.
if it is a big leak e.g. fails completely then i am not sure what would happen.
