    Should I be able to turn my front wheels when car is in park?

    Yesterday I fitted front discs,pads & lower straight arms I'v had for all most a year

    The old front discs wanted to stay on the car so I had to give them a wee tap with a mash hammer to let them know they need to come off when I want them too.

    Anyway. I had the front of the car in the air & the car was in park but I was able to turn the front wheels with no problems. I thought with the car being four wheel drive I shouldn't be able to do this? Am I right in thinking this or is my head up my bottom?

    The mighty Leedsnum has gone but the Airtrek mods will soon fill this space

    Heya Andy,

    Putting the gearbox in Park locks the gearbox from turning, between the gearbox and the wheel are two diffs (front and rear) plus the center transfer case, all will allow the wheels to move, providing they don't exceed the limitations of the diff;

    • 100% certain both front and rear diffs will each allow one wheel to spin if the opposite wheel on the same axle is free-wheeling
    • 90% convinced front and rear diffs will each allow one wheel to spin if one or more wheels on the opposite axle is free-wheeling

    Hopefully someone else can comment?

    Both front wheel were free wheeling as the front was on axle stands so that makes sense.

    The front and center diffs are open, so both front wheels will be able to spin independently.
