not quite as low as it looks, there was a small gap between needle and the E, this was a fill, with a fair bit of spirited driving, what i would call a lot of idling, and what i would call a lot of short trips to the supermarket and work because im too lazy to walk 3 blocks haha, was low enough that 9litres got it back to the line

^ wow ... never had it that low ever !!!

I always refill when it gets in the 1/4 range, just in case I may need to go for a long run somewhere.
We work to live, and to live is to drive a VR-4, around corners at speed. But it costs see here

a bit lower, full tank plus 22 litres got me that many km, barely made it to gas station, wouldnt rev over 1500 lol, it was at 583km when i got to station, so im guessing 60l tank plus the 22 litres, gives me just over 7km/l

    Yep good figures

On a recent weekend away i achieved 27.6mpg average. That was a lot of up and down hill driving in peak district and the journey home at 70-80mph. 316.3 miles and 52 litres to refil to the brim.

With my Galant, my PB has been 560km (350mi) and 58L(!) to fill up which equals:

    10.35 L /100km
    9.65 km /L
    0.10 L /km

    5.9994 miles per litre
    43.8931 kilometers per gallon
    0.1667 litres per mile
    0.0228 gallons per kilometer
    27.2739 miles per gallon

Mostly open road driving, some spirited + 3 days of short (~6km) journeys.

    Not bad, not bad...

google auto convert says 10.1L/100Km is 23.3mpg, not 28mpg

    EDIT:-
sorry my bad google is doing USA gallons not UK gallons, 28 is correct.

The needle won't go much lower when the tank is completely empty. I had the excitement to drive on fumes last year on the german autobahn... I did reach a gas station (sputtering and couching heavily for the last few miles, not getting faster than 20km/h anymore) and I filled up exactly 60 liters. Last week I changed the fuel filter and my oh my was this thing dirty. Lots and lots of debree/rust/crud came out. I wouldn't recommend doing what I did. Well... except changing the fuel filter as a precaution and it doesn't cost much either (around 11 GBP I recall).

Welll. Doing steady 80km/h in auto will take about 8-8.7l/100km. Doing steady 100km/h will take 9-9.3. My typical fuel consumption is a little under 10 l/100km. Thats because i have a 40km distance to work and i never go over 100km/h. Torque convertor wastes lots of fuel with a cold gearbox.

With my last fill up I managed 9 km/L.

Not brilliant, however I have barely setup 1000cc injectors and was running high boost and climbing into the 230%/240% load areas. So not unhappy with that

I would just like to say the global statement that talking MPG on a tank full is pretty meaningless, one persons definition of a tank can widely differ from another's. Even saying down to the red light coing on is not accurate enough, there could be 2 gallons left or 1 gallon left depending how long he light has been on for. And that makes a massive difference.

Personally I would never normally let the gauge go down below 1/4 of a tank left, but that actually indicates 1/2 a tank remains.
So are people referring to gauge levels or actual levels.

I know it is being pedantic but you might as well give actual MPG figures or specify where the gauge needle had dropped to to give some indication of what you consider. Tank of fuel is.

This true. I get between 260 and 280 miles to a "tank". But when I fill up when the red light comes on I rarely get much over 45 litres in before the pump clicks off meaning I still have around 15 litres left.

15 litres of super at current prices is about 22 quid! So potentially I had another 50-80 miles left out of the "full tank" meaning I could theoretically get 350 miles before it actually ran out of fuel!

You definitely get better mileage on long trips. I used half a tank going up North and coming back, so about 360km. Was pretty impressed with that.

What I always do is fill a car to the first click of the pump. That way on the second fill up I can see how many miles I got from the last tank, and how many litres it took to fill up the second time around. Then I use those figures to work out the real life mpg. Has always worked for me.

That being said the Golf gets around 450 miles to a tank from mixed driving. Yes its economical but its boring!

Using my fill to the first click method as a way of confirming a full tank each time, I managed 242 miles to 45.79 litres. That works out as 24.05mpg. Majority of those miles were done at 80-90 leptons on a partly flooded A1 in the middle of the night. A few WOT moments the day after as well just to see how she drove. 27.6p per mile will take some getting used to, as the Golf used to cost half that. How big is the fuel tank in the VR4?
