Cambelt..

Is it crazy to want to get the cambelt done, (for piece of mind kind of thing) even though it still has about 30k left until it needs to be done?

If you have the service record of when the cambelt was last done, then it's fine to go to the 100,000km period - however IMO I would do it 5-10,000km before it's actually due.

Cambelts are quite strong though and last for ages - my V6 Lancer went 178,000km on its factory fitted cambelt (although it was just about in bits!) and my friend's Ford Probe is over 200,000km on the factory belt (non-interference engine, so he doesn't care if it snaps). I wouldn't recommend going past the replacement interval though.

Yeah its written in the engine bay that it was done at 120,000km and the km are now at 193,000-194,000, so wait a bit and do it around 210,000km?

I'd do it at 200-205,000 to be safe, especially if it's just written in permanent marker rather than a proper garage's sticker.

Lol that Ford engine is an interference engine if it lets go at the right revs!!

you reckon? it shouldnt at any point, unless valves are dropping more than they should be

Yup I reckon. They are a non interference but the tolerance is bugger all. They can drop enough to make contact

As above, no panic to change. The few cambelt failures I know of have been wierd ones rather than a belt becoming too old. The belt has normally been taken out by something else - accessory belt wrapping round, water pump seizing, bearing fail etc.

So cambelt interval is 100,000 kms or 5 years. Is the time overly important or is it what ever comes first? e.g. drive 20,000kms in 5 years should it still be changed?

In theory yes. Usually people go off Km's.

I think the theory is that the rubber degrades over time as well as with use.

Yes rubber does degrade. 100,000kms or 5yrs.
I'd go ahead and do it considering if it does let go you will have 24 bent valves as the 6a13tt is interference.
