Uh Oh, I've gained a sound that shouldn't be there

Just got to the mother-in-laws and as I'm coming up to the house the car starts making a very strange noise. Now I know just saying this is about as helpful as a chocolate teapot. I decided to use my noggin and took a vid on my phone so you could hear the noise. I wasn't really aiming the camera anywhere just close to the sound so the picture has nothing interesting in it.

Anyways here is the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYXl59Nn8tg&feature=plcp after you hear me say 'It's not doing it now' It then starts to make the noise.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I need to drive about for work tonight and in the morning, and all Thursday morning before I can get to a garage. But the garage is about 30 miles away.

My partner just went and took a look, He said the noise gets worse when the wheels are at full lock and thinks it is the power steering pump. All the liquids are topped up so it cant be empty

Oh and is that happening on full lock or all the time - p.s. it's not healthy for pump to be struggling at full lock.

Noise gets worse when it is at full lock. The noise in the clip is when the steering wheel was being turned to full lock. Sorry it took a while to reply. Was helping the mother in law

What would happen if the power steering pump just gave up while I was driving? Apart from being really hard to turn

Got Ashley to drive home, Don't know if it makes a difference but noise stops when clutch is down. Tried a bit of WD40 on the pump but didn't help Thinking now that it is a belt because it turned into a squeaky squeal, that increased in speed as the revs did. Oh well that's another thing to add to fix list

i would check the tension on the PAS belt and in particular check the tightness of the locking bolt on the tension pulley,
my car was making that sort of noise shortly before the tensioner pulley fell off, and the PAS belt got shredded in to belt spagetti.
it might not be this but i want yoy to check it sooner rather than later.
i never found the pulley and i had just replaced it, that was £60 down the drain, quite possibly literally down the drain.

    Bye for Now!

I would check it out but I have no idea what I'm looking at. Is PAS power assisted steering??? If you point me in the right direction/tell me how to do it, then I will do it tomorrow when I get back from work. I'm not driving it at the mo so at least it cant get any worse.

I put my money on Crankshaft pulley, its sound exact the same as on mine old Galant v6, its two steel rings connect together by rubber, and that rubber its on the way out, you should be able to see how its moving and making noises while pressing a throttle quickly.

i take it you know which is the PAS belt (yes, Power Assisted Steering), left side of engine Pas belt at the front alternator belt to the back of the engine. the tensioner for the PAS belt is the pulley towards the front of the crank pulley the belt does not go round the tensioner on the grooved side of the belt it presses against the back of the belt to tension it.
lock nut is on the middle of the tension pulley, and the tensioner adjustment screw is on the bottom of the mountig bracket that the tensioner pulley is fixed to.

    hope this helps.

Glad to know I was looking at the right bit. I just read the thread on belts and pulleys and understand that a lot better now . How do I know if it is tight enough or too loose? Do I need a special tool? Sorry for all the questions I want to learn all this.

if you can turn in 90 degrees it's too loose, there should be some play.

Imagine a clock and the belt is at 9 and 3 in it's normal resting position, it should twist between 8 and 2 or 10 and 4.

anything close to 12 and 6 is too loose.

    Hope that helps :

Pure genius, belt is just right, one of the pulleys is wobbleing. Just got to get the wheel off to get to it:eek:
