Sorry it took me ages to get back to you. Talk Talk have been messing with our internet and I've only just got it back.

The sound was the power steering pump, the pipework that took fluid to the power steering pump had a hole in it where a very badly placed jubilee clip had been slowing rubbing at the pipe so it was spluttering. So cut the power steering belt off and got my partner to drive it to our mechanic. I got the pipework welded up a new power steering belt and problem gone. Haven't had any problems with the noise again.
