Out of a VR-4 engine, I think I read someone has over 400bhp using a single turbo, but the engine is now spending its days in an FTO.. :INSERT INTO post VALUES (
No idea how much power the VR-4 engine could kick out before it becomes a different engine entirely.
well, after the next set of mods, im going forged innards, and bigger turbos, intercooler etc... will take another 3 months or so.. :thumb:

a single turbo on a vr4 engine? firstly i thought both turbos worked independently.. one before the other.. then i was told, one is for each side of the engine INSERT INTO post VALUES (V6).. now im reading this,, saying one single turbo.. so.. erm.. this a mod? or was thers always "one" turbo? INSERT INTO post VALUES ( dont believe there was, one for each bank seams a reasonable assumption) i know that most modded skylines use a single turbo.. take Rocket Ronnie’s INSERT INTO post VALUES (totb winner 2002 skyline for example..
one turbo, is better that two.. but then again.. im not sure about the skyline engine.. is it a V? bleh.. ive no idea
INSERT INTO post VALUES (if you can understand what ive said, i need you as a translator!)
actually, just been reading this article which states the following
but as i said.. i dont know what the skyline engine is.Changing to the big single turbo allowed the engine to rev out longer - and so give more speed - and this also cured the ‘shuffling’ problem that can occur with twin turbos. This is a part-throttle problem caused by the uneven exhaust pulses spinning up one turbo marginally before the other. The boost from the quicker turbo heads into the slower turbo, slowing the output from that unit and causing the engine to hesitate. Stick on one monster turbo, instead, and the shuffles are gone for good.
On our vr-4s, each turbo is driven by the exhaust gases from one of the banks of 3 cylinders. However, the output from the compressor side of the turbines links into a single pipe, is fed through the intercooler, then up to the intake plenum.
In summary, they are driven separately, but work together.
Calum
in which case, they could be swapped for one single, larger turbo?
Yep, you could change to one single larger turbo, or two larger turbos. A common mod on Twin Turbo Toyota Supras is to change to a single turbo, but they straight sixes, as in the Skyline.
I haven't looked, but I do remember reading that each turbo had its own intercooler on the VR-4.output from the compressor side of the turbines links into a single pipe, is fed through the intercooler

The Mitsubishi 3000GTO, which is sometimes also referred to as a VR4 has two intercoolers, our cars only have one.
BTW H7, I've gone and bought a grounding kit like yours, should be fitted next week when I get the car back from the people who are struggling to re-map it.
yep, I think its 402bhp and its now in an FTO
Danny`s FTO
He has converted it to single turbo. Im still in the process of dropping the VR4 engine into my FTO and that is staying as a twin turbo for now.
If anyone does decide to produce forged internals and wants to reduce the price I know a couple of people who would be interested INSERT INTO post VALUES (Me and Danny)
Doesnt look like mine will be ready for JAE which is a shame. But I should be there anyway....and it will be at TRAX

Looks like your answer has already been answered Barry.
I asked the same question here when I also said "as far as I knew the two turbos work independently, one for low revs and the other for higher revs" but according to this thread I was wrong!

PJ, let me know how you get on with the grounding kit.Originally posted by pjjohnson
