New cat from US from Pacific Northwest

Hello to everyone out there & a double shout out to any female members on here mad pros, I mainly joined this site to absorb all the information I can I myself don't have a VR4 but with the strict US emissions & regs theres a 15 + yr wait to import most BUT theres a gray area right with imports. the "safe zone" will b in 2015 but during that time I wanted to know what type of time & connections one will have to have in order to maintain a car like the VR-4.

    Once again Hello to everyone
I hope to meet alot of people from all across the world on here

There are a few North American VR-4s now, although all but one are north of the border! The exception is Mante's, which he's had in the US for years.
October 2023 fleet status: 100% operational

Welcome TarMac, my partner is from Iowa and we intend to move over there in 5 or so years time and I'll be taking my VR4 with me and she is going to take her FTO, think they'll both turn a few heads

I think the Canadian ones are 15 years old, so 1996/1997.

Mante is in the USA and has a 1997 saloon. He has been on this site longer than me, so he has had it for a good while too!

really now???.. ima have to triple check this out again when I first started looking I was using an old car dealer my family bought around 2001 so I asked him for help on the whole importing a car into the US what confused us was the 15 yr line & the recent crack down by the DOT on imports labeled as kit cars. I was looking at the 8th gen ones. Ive asked alot of ppl on which route to take on obtain a Vr-4 like build on vs buying/importing. the few that gave good advice said itd be the same either way on (building ur own engine/ twin turbo set/dyno/ect) vs ( factory made/importing fees/registering ) pointing being is I could prbly get 7th gen then count from 96.

    Thanks for the info

The other guy who looked into it much more recently is @Eric who was stationed over here for a couple of years, and wanted to take his VR-4 back to the States. The cost was somewhat prohibitive, although I can't recall the exact reasons. Probably a combination of general compliance, emissions, etc.

Ima take it that eric didn't take his in the end. yeah the biggest issue for me will be the cost of shipping the car over here & getting the car registered legal can be anywhere between the lucky low end of 10k to around 17k. the car alone is a great deal around 15k here is second hand honda s2k's coming from a city thats oversaturated by hondas.
Im a huge Mitsubishi fan so yeah this type of tight rope walking with legal stuff with the car is liking putting in adam & eve's shoes when asked not to eat the apple. The VR4's design all around is amazing. Ive gotten to know a few ppl over the last couple of yrs with illegal cars, when 2015 comes the emissions & all that stuff will b a bit more relaxed but being that its 2012 the DOT will try to squeeze as much money as they can before that =/

Huge thing for importing to the US is the 25 year rule...There might be some 'loopholes' if you're just in the country to work for X amount of time.

Basically, you can't import any vehicles from outside of North America unless they're 25 years or older. Some people have found grey areas around it, and I think a few have done it legally, but that is a handful.

see thats what i thought at first but i relooked up the guide lines theres gonna b multiple agencies to go through, I wrote some numbers down to call Im just curious to hear from actually ppl that work in the right agencies. any car can be imported new or old the whole 25 year rule means saftey & emisson are lifted mean you dont have to pay extra for test and check fees but now those types of regulation dont apply to a AE 86 but anything newer then 25+ will still have way more restricts but like I said Im going to call 2morrow see what I find Im at actually at work waiting to clock on....whoo =/
