    Gearbox questions

Could someone please help to clarify a few things

My gearbox is a 1st facelift one (post 2000) so in order to just swap the box I will need one from the same age of car?
If I use a PFL gearbox I will have to use a PFL ecu aswell?
Will a PFL gearbox fit or has it got an external filter that will get in the way of something else?
If I fit a PFL gearbox with ecu change the BHP of my car or is this a separate ecu to the one that deals with the engine map / power?

    Thanking you in anticipation
Possibly the only VR4 that was driven by the current owner before being registered..... & it's a UK car

its a separate ecu so power will not be affected , think there are 8 different codes available so match up the box, not sure about the filter thing , but at a guess i would say it will fine as long as the ecu matches .the filter should not be an issue

Physically any VR4 box will fit.

The 2nd facelift auto boxes did away with the speedo sensor and the corresponding part of the loom. I have no idea how that would work, if at all. I am under the impression that if you match the box and ecu all will be good, but it seems to be a bit of a dark art sometimes making sure a replacement box works properly!

Ok thanks. Mine has the red recaros & i'm sure someone confirmed the build date a while back as April 2000 even though the car is July 2001. Will try to dig out the thread

just remembered but may be of relevance to you ,

when my 96 manual box got put into a face lift john had a few issues with it due to the speed sensor , so maybe a pre facelift box might be a last resort .

Here is a list from Glenn of the auto box type and when they were changed in the build process.

It looks like mine has the speed sensor but no external filter, so its the 2nd from last gearbox they made? Looks like i'm going to have to get a different one to whats in it already anyway so as long as everything matches I should be ok? Going to have to change some of my pipework if I do that though as it goes where the external filter goes

Ok, next question (sorry but its proving to be a bit of a mare searching on iPhone), manual conversion. If I wanted to do this, do the Evo internals fit int my bell housing or would I need to start off with a manual one?

AFAIK you need a VR4 bellhousing, although an evo box will fit. You may be able to buy just the bellhousing casing and swap it onto an evo box though?

I think that Chris asking if man gears off EVO will suit auto vr4 bellhousing ?

Sorry, I wasn't clear then was I? In my head I knew what I wanted to say! I am confident that the auto box bell housing will not bolt to the manual box.

Could I add my less than educated tuppenceworth here? Having done an auto box swap and had a nightmare with it, my advice would be to 1) fix your existing box, or 2) do a manual conversion. Given what a tasty car you have Chris, I reckon your best bet is to get it converted to manual while you're in a position where you need to spend quite a bit of money on it anyway
Never argue with a fool – they will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience!

Yeah that's the conclusion I am slowly coming to.

Pros, car can take more power & will be mega desirable combined with everything else

Cons, I hate manuals & would make my cruise control & flappy paddles pointless

cruise in top gear on a proper road is still handy - and your car will be worth more money, rather than you spending loads of money on the auto box to make it worth exactly the same as it was before it broke.
