No the harnesses are not all the same.
You mate will have a lot of stuff missing from his harness, as he does not have AYC.
Type v vr4 are not very easy to come by so good look with the search.

I would probably get a normal wiring loom and try and splice it into the unburn section of the loom.
Unfortunately some of the electronics in the car will have been damaged as well. So unless you mate is a good auto electrician with a lot of time on his hands you could stuffed.

The other thing to do is Buy another car they are cheap.

    Bye for Now!

Have a chat with @GalantOnly - He may answer if you can use a loom of a VR-4 Type S for this car as well.

I'd imagine it may work but you'll have additional (but useless) wires for the AYC. Anyhow, can you post additional info, if the car came with cruise control, ASC, TCL? What year/month is the car. Is it manual or auto transmission?

In any way you are looking into changing the whole engine loom plus fusebox. Any idea what has caused the fire?

there is also differences in prefacelift/facelift looms, @Kenneth had issues with this when fixing a fire damaged galant

think the dash would not light up/function fully

If the change lamp was blinking, the current from alternator was too high, which caused the alternator relay to melt, I'll guess...

The biggest problem here is neither the fuse box loom or engine loom. The control harness is burnt too. And it includes all the way back from G-sensors, throu the engine & A/T ECUs, MAF, gearbox wiring, speed sensor, front injectors, throttle wiring, coil wiring, A/C compressor, camshaft sensor and so on... This one is very PITA to swap

when i did my VR2 conversion i found the main power harness from the fuse box to the cabin are indeed the same or at least compatible since I just plugged in the VR4 engine harness straight into it....this was done in a GDI Legnum so it should work out well for u especially since it also has no rear AYC .... lol
